About this space
Originally part of the College Warden’s accommodation, the Audit Room is one of the most richly appointed rooms in the building, with plasterwork, panelling and doors dating back to the 17th century.
The rich history of the Audit Room provides a fascinating setting for smaller meetings. Once the College Warden’s study, it was used most famously by the Elizabethan alchemist Dr Dee. It is rumoured that the burn mark in a table was created by the devil, summoned by Dee in his experiments with magic.
The room contains original furniture and accessories relating to its former life, whilst now offering comfortable accommodation for meetings of up to 16 people, adjacent to the Baronial Hall and with the option to tour Chetham’s Library during your visit.

The grade I listed building dates to 1421 and is one of the oldest in Manchester, making it perfect for history lovers, architecture enthusiasts or those looking for somewhere unique. Our collection of books is used by researchers from around the world and we’re an accredited museum.
