Your Guide to Hiring Private Dining Rooms in Manchester

What size private dining room do you need?

Manchester private dining rooms range from really small rooms for 2 to 12, up to spaces for 120-plus, with most group bookings sitting in the 8 to 25 band. Match the room to your final headcount so everyone has a seat and the space does not feel empty or cramped.

  • Really small rooms – 2 to 12 guests, ideal for a date-night feast, close-knit friends or a family meal. From around £25 per head.
  • Small rooms – up to 25 guests, the most common size for birthdays, work dinners and hen dos. Minimum spend averages about £1,000.
  • Medium spaces – 50 to 100 guests, for larger celebrations and corporate functions, often a semi-private area or a restaurant section.
  • Large spaces – 120-plus guests, for full-restaurant buyouts and big parties. Minimum spend averages about £3,000.

How to narrow down a private dining room

  • Guest count – seated dinner numbers, including any plus-ones.
  • Occasion – work dinner, birthday, hen do, engagement, family celebration, Christmas or wedding meal.
  • Budget – per head or a total minimum spend, and whether it is lunch, brunch or dinner.
  • Cuisine – Italian, Asian, Indian, modern British, or a specific menu style.
  • Dietary needs – halal, kosher, vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, dairy-free or nut-free options for your guests.

  • Work and team dinners

For a work dinner of 8 to 30, a restaurant with a fully private room and a set group menu keeps the evening simple and the bill predictable. Ask about a private entrance, AV for a short speech, and a drinks package. The Private Dining Room at 20 Stories on Deansgate pairs a skyline view with a modern British menu and is rated 4.9 out of 5.

  • Friends and birthdays

For a birthday or friends’ dinner of 8 to 25, a small private dining room with a lively feel and a shared feasting menu works best. Look for a room you can decorate and a set menu that keeps the ordering easy. The Private Dining Room at Gusto Italian in the City Centre is a popular choice, rated 4.8 out of 5.

  • Family celebrations

For a family occasion of 10 to 25, a restaurant private room with a flexible menu and step-free access suits a mixed-age group. Confirm dietary options in advance and whether children are welcome, and ask about a quieter, fully private room rather than a semi-private area.

  • Hen dos

For a hen do of 10 to 20, a stylish small private room with a shared menu and space for a toast is the sweet spot. Check whether you can bring a cake, play your own music, and stay on after the meal.

  • Engagement dinners

For an engagement of 20 to 50, a rooftop or a large private room with a view lifts the occasion. Ask about canape and drinks packages, a private bar, and the best time to book for the light, such as sunset or golden hour.

  • Christmas parties (work, family, Christmas Eve or Christmas lunch)

For a festive meal of 15 to 50, a restaurant private room with a Christmas set menu books up fastest, whether it is a work party, a family dinner, a Christmas Eve gathering or a Christmas lunch. Manchester festive rooms fill from early autumn, so secure December dates well ahead.

Choose by venue type and cuisine

Manchester private dining spans restaurants with private rooms, pubs, rooftops, small dedicated rooms and dramatic historic vaults, across every major cuisine. Pick the style that matches your occasion and crowd; each type below explains what it does best.

Restaurants with private rooms

Best for seated dinners where food and ambiance lead, from intimate rooms to full-restaurant sections. Look at the cuisine and menu style, whether the room is fully private or semi-private, the set-menu or feasting options, and any group packages. Italian, Asian, Indian and modern British are all well represented.

Pubs with private dining rooms

Best for relaxed birthdays and friends’ gatherings that want good food without a formal feel. Expect a private or semi-private area, a proper drinks list and a warm atmosphere. Check guest capacity, whether there is music, and which gatherings the room suits, such as work, friends or family.

›  Popular for: milestone birthdays  ·  friends’ dinners

Rooftop private dining

Best for engagements and milestone dinners that trade a basement table for a skyline view. Ask about the view and which direction it faces, the privacy level, the standing and seated capacity, step-free access, and the best time of day to book for sunset or night views.

›  Popular for: engagement dinners  ·  corporate events

Small private dining rooms

Best for really small groups of 2 to 20 where affordability and intimacy matter most. These rooms come in a range of styles, from historic and characterful to cool and quirky or sleek and modern. They are usually the most budget-friendly option, with set lunches from around £25 per head.

Historic and vault spaces

Best for a special occasion where the room itself is the talking point. Manchester has striking private rooms set in restored bank vaults and heritage buildings. The Vault at Lucky Cat on King Street is set in a converted bank safe and pairs the setting with Asian-inspired small plates.
›  Popular for: engagements  ·  milestone birthdays

By cuisine and dietary needs

Manchester private rooms cover Italian, Asian, Indian and modern British, with halal, kosher, vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free menus widely available. For Italian, Gusto Italian is a reliable pick; for Asian small plates, Lucky Cat; and for modern British with a view, 20 Stories. Always confirm dietary options with the venue when you enquire.

How to choose the best private dining room in Manchester

Match six things to your event: size, layout, cuisine, dietary needs, budget and transport. Running through these before you enquire saves time and avoids surprises.

  • Size – match your final headcount to the room, from a really small room for 2 to 12 up to a full-restaurant buyout.
  • Layout – long boardroom tables suit up to 20 for a shared feel; several smaller tables work better for larger groups.
  • Cuisine – Manchester covers Italian, Asian, Indian and modern British, so match the menu to the occasion.
  • Dietary needs – confirm halal, kosher, vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, dairy-free or nut-free menus with the venue early.
  • Budget – check whether you are quoted a minimum spend or a hire fee, plus service charge, and whether lunch is cheaper than dinner.
  • Transport – City Centre, Spinningfields and Deansgate rooms are closest to the tram network for guests travelling in.

Booked Private Dining Room at Browns Brasserie & Bar Manchester

The staff had been amazing from start to finish from making the booking/pre-order to the evening event. The pre-order was easy to complete and worked even better on the night as you could use each persons name and then there was no confusion to what anyone had ordered. We took a cake, balloons etc during the day and the staff were so friendly and helpful and stored them for us to have on the table later that evening. The food was incredible (as always) and the waitresses and waiters were all amazing and very attentive.

Booked Upstairs Dart Room at Almost Famous Great Northern

Fantastic private dining - we were a hour late thanks to last-minute wedding stresses and they were still very accommodating, they allowed those who arrived on time to sit in a different private area to watch the football and was very polite and accommodating when we eventually got there. Food was served very quickly and everyone had a great evening.

Everything! Camilla who hosted was honestly incredible. She made the room perfect, her and the serving team couldn’t have been better…Attentive, kind, patient. The food was exquisite, there were a couple of dishes that were disappointing but apart from that it was so tasty. I genuinely couldn’t have asked for a better venue or experience.

Booked Private Ballroom at Black Dog NQ

Emma was professional and straightforward to deal with. She replied quickly and made booking easy. The team at the ballroom were superb, friendly and accommodating and the ballroom itself was perfect for our work event which replaced a traditional 'corporate dinner'. All our team commented on how they really enjoyed the setup and atmosphere. We would highly recommend and will absolutely be booking again for our future events.

Booked Honey Restaurant Exclusive at Hotel Gotham

I can't fault this venue for a wedding reception - the service was impeccable, (thank you Karolina and Sebastian and the rest of the staff) the food was delicious - the chef amended the menu for us to suit dietary requests. It is an amazing room to have your wedding meal, with pianist, and the addition of the use of the member's bar and terrace with views over Manchester (albeit it rained quite a lot!) was absolutely fabulous. There was plenty of space for us all.
