About this space

Shruti Box is a grassroots, artist-run studio and performance space dedicated to uplifting South Asian and underrepresented artists in Chicago. Our mission is to provide affordable access to high-quality recording, rehearsal, and performance opportunities, while fostering a community grounded in collaboration and equity. We exist to amplify voices that have historically been excluded from mainstream cultural spaces and to build infrastructure that supports their long-term creative growth.

For small private events with the use of 2 PA speakers and a microphone and stage, if needed.

Practice Space Rental (Band): 35/hour
Rental of studio space for artists. No Engineering. 3 or more people.

Practice Space Rental (Solo/Duo): $20/hour
Rental of studio space for artists. No Engineering. 1-2 people.

Recording Rental (Band): $55/hour
Rental of studio space and equipment. 3 or more people.

Recording Rental (Solo/Duo): $40/hour
Rental of studio space and equipment. 1-2 people.

Individual Song Mixing: $100 Flat
Helps artists take their mix to be ready to release onto all platforms. Up to 4 minutes.

Mastering: $75 Flat
Digital master chain, mono master, tested on 5 audio systems.

Producer/Engineer Rate: $40/hour
Any services rendered i.e. mixing, engineering, recording, etc. by a Shruti Box Producer

Podcast Package: $150 per Episode
Space rental, equipment rental, audio mix

The Shruti Box—a small, modest suitcase-shaped instrument—produces a steady drone that serves as the foundation of Indian classical music, providing a constant anchor for boundless artistic exploration.

Our mission is to embody the role of our namesake: to be a steady foundation where artists can develop and amplify their unique voices and find community.
With a focus on the South-Asian community, we aim to foster a space where musicians and artists can refine their craft, connect with audiences, and amplify their voices through high-quality recording services, studio time, and dynamic live events.

We envision our role as a hub in a thriving cultural scene that balances tradition and innovation, allowing us to reclaim our Desi roots while embracing inclusivity for all backgrounds.

As a grassroots community and a Third Space, we are committed to creating a welcoming environment where individuals from all walks of life can come together, connect, and support one another in their artistic journeys.
