Safety guidelines for planning an event in Canada during the COVID-19 period

We know it can be difficult to keep up with all the COVID-19 related regulations, especially when it comes to what kinds of events can take place and how many guests are allowed. To help you better understand, we have prepared a summary to update you on the most current safety rules that apply to venues. Keep in mind that even though most venues will follow such guidelines, we would still recommend reaching out to the venue you intend to book to find out in detail how their capacity has changed

General venue operation and event hosting guidelines

Toronto

  • Generally, all businesses or facilities open to the public must limit capacity to the number of people that can maintain physical distancing of 2 metres
  • Restaurants, bars, food trucks, concession stands and other food or drink establishments can open for indoor and outdoor dining, take-out, drive-through, and delivery
    • Capacity must be limited to the number that can maintain a physical distancing of at least 2 metres from every other person at the establishment, except for patrons sitting at the same table
    • No dancing allowed
  • Night clubs are permitted to open if
    • their indoor capacity is limited to the lesser of the number needed to permit physical distancing of 2 metres, up to 25% or 250 patrons
    • their outdoor capacity is limited to 75% or 5,000 people, whichever is less
  • Meeting or event spaces, conference centres, convention centres can open if
    • their indoor capacity for the facility is limited to permit two metres physical distancing up to 50% or 1,000 people, whichever is less
    • their outdoor capacity for the facility is limited to 75% or 5,000 people, whichever is less
  • Indoor and outdoor wedding ceremonies need to permit physical distancing of 2 metres
  • Photography studios and services can open if their indoor capacity is limited to the number that can maintain a physical distancing of 2 metres from every other person at the establishment

Vancouver

  • Indoor organized seated gatherings can have a capacity of 50 people or 50% capacity, whichever is greater
  • Outdoor organized seated gatherings can have a capacity of 5,000 people or 50% capacity, whichever is greater
  • There are no group limits for indoor and outdoor dining
    • Venues can determine their own table limits
    • No socializing between tables
    • No dancing
    • Liquor service hours return to normal
  • Casinos can operate with reduced capacity. Gaming stations can operate at approximately 50% capacity across the sector
