It is important to ensure that your gathering is able to focus on remembering your loved one, so it is important to find a location that enables this. The most important thing to remember when choosing a venue for a funeral wake is that you want everyone to feel comfortable. There should be plenty of room for people to talk and grieve together, as well as a space where people can have some privacy if they need it. Function rooms or dry hire venues are usually the best choices for a funeral wake because both provide ample space for guests to gather and comfort each other. You can also consider hotel venues or restaurants to provide guests with a flawless dining experience and excellent service at the wake. The key is to choose a venue that will create the right atmosphere for your loved one's final farewell.

A funeral wake is a time to celebrate the life of a loved one and say goodbye. It's an opportunity for friends and family to gather together, share memories, and reconnect. Wakes are often held in a home or at a funeral home, but they can also be held at a restaurant or community hall. There are no specific rules for a funeral wake, but there are some customs that help make the event more meaningful. For example, the wake often begins with prayers and hymns, followed by short speeches from family members and friends. Make sure there is enough room for everyone to sit comfortably and offer food and drink to your guests. If there is a meal, it's customary to hold it after the funeral service rather than before. It's also important to remember that the funeral wake is a time for grieving. You want to make sure that the venue can offer privacy and quiet space for family members and friends to process their feelings. Finally, be sure to communicate with your venue about any needs of your guests.

Your Guide to Hiring Funeral Wake Venues in London

Planning a Funeral Wake in London: A Supportive Guide to Finding the Right Venue

Losing someone is hard enough—finding a venue for their funeral wake shouldn’t add to the stress. At Tagvenue, we make it easier to find a space in London that feels right for saying goodbye. Whether you're planning something simple and quiet or a warm celebration of life, our selection of wake venues includes everything from intimate pubs to elegant halls and peaceful garden spaces.

What to Expect When Booking a Wake Venue in London

Wakes in London can take many forms, and the city’s venues are well-equipped to support both traditional memorials and more personal, informal gatherings. Here's what to keep in mind as you plan:

  • Licensing & Regulations: Most venues are licensed for private events and can legally host wakes without any special permissions. However, if you plan to play live music or serve alcohol, make sure the venue has the right licenses—or ask if a Temporary Event Notice (TEN) is needed.

  • Noise & Curfews: Especially in residential areas, London venues often have noise restrictions after 10–11pm. If you’re planning speeches or music, check the venue’s sound policies.

  • Accessibility: Many newer and renovated venues in London now have step-free access, lifts, and accessible bathrooms, but older buildings may not. Always double-check if you're expecting elderly guests or anyone with mobility issues.

  • Parking & Transport: Central venues rarely have dedicated parking, so encourage guests to use public transport. Look for venues near major tube lines or with easy bus access. Some outer London venues may have free or discounted on-site parking.

  • Food & Drink: London wake venues typically offer in-house catering, with menu options ranging from finger food to afternoon tea. Others allow external caterers or BYO for a corkage fee—worth asking if you want something specific like homemade dishes or culturally significant meals.

Personalising the Wake: Thoughtful Ideas

  • Every life is unique, and the best wakes reflect that. Even in a short time frame, small details can make a big emotional impact:
  • Display photos, personal items, or even a guestbook where people can leave messages or memories.
  • Background playlists with the person's favourite songs can set the tone beautifully—just make sure your venue supports Bluetooth or live playback.

  • Consider giving guests a small token, like a bookmark with a quote, a packet of seeds to plant, or a printed poem.

  • If possible, designate a peaceful spot for reflection—some venues have side rooms or corners that can be set up for this purpose.

Types of Wake Venues in London

Here are a few venue types that work especially well for funeral receptions:

  • Traditional Pubs – Comforting, familiar, and often with private back rooms. Many include food packages and staff who are used to hosting wakes.

  • Community Halls – Cost-effective and flexible, ideal if you’re catering yourself or want to include cultural rituals.

  • Historic Buildings – Add a sense of dignity and timelessness, perfect for more formal gatherings.

  • Garden Venues – Calming and full of light; these work beautifully for daytime memorials, especially in spring and summer.

  • Modern Studios or Galleries – For a more personal, creative tribute, especially if your loved one had artistic interests.

  • Hotel Function Rooms – Practical if guests are travelling, with accommodation and full service on-site.

Final Thoughts

Organising a wake isn’t something anyone wants to become an expert in—but with the right space and some thoughtful planning, it can become a comforting, meaningful day. Whether you're after a quiet corner of a pub or a rooftop with a view, Tagvenue helps you book venues quickly, so you can focus on what really matters: honouring a life and supporting one another.

Ash and Janine are excellent hosts and really went out of their way to make sure everything was just as we wanted on the day. The venue is a great sized space that you can use for all kinds of functions. They were able to provide table cloths and chair covers and there are some lovely fairy lights already set up in the room as well as a projector and sound system. On this occasion we didn’t order catering but the menu looks very good. We did though make use of the bar which had a full selection of soft and alcoholic drinks. Overall we couldn’t recommend them enough.

The perfect venue for our funeral reception. It couldn't have been more perfect than it was for 100 guests and external catering. Jonathan was absolutely incredible, helped at every step of the way which ensured the event ran as smoothly as it possibly could. Thanks again!

Everything about this venue is wonderful. Alistair was warm and helpful when I got in touch. He advised me on what I did and did not need, which saved me money. On the day Yannis helped us to get organised, and was genuinely kind and made the whole event very easy. I look forward to returning at some point.
