Your Guide to Hiring Outdoor Venues in London

What types of outdoor venues can you hire in London?

London's outdoor spaces fall into six main types. Choose by the atmosphere you want, your group size and how much cover you need if the weather turns.

Pub gardens and beer gardens - best for casual birthdays and summer socials

Relaxed, budget-friendly and usually with indoor cover if it rains. Beer gardens suit informal parties, watch-alongs and live-music nights. Best for 20 to 400 guests

Top pick: The Garage at The Salisbury Arms, Winchmore Hill - from £200, up to 40 guests. For larger crowds, Big Penny Social's Summer Garden in Walthamstow holds up to 400 people.

Rooftop terraces - best for evening drinks and golden-hour receptions

Skyline views turn a reception into an occasion. Book late afternoon into early evening for sunset and golden hour, or after dark for the lit-up City. Best for 40 to 120 guests; check whether the terrace is covered or heated for shoulder-season dates.

Top pick: Rooftop Garden at Cathedral View - from £300, up to 120 guests, with St Paul's on the horizon. Near London Bridge, the Roof Terrace at Uncommon Borough (from £2,400, up to 60 people) suits corporate socials, and Proper Office's Roof Garden in Shoreditch is an affordable option (from £282 hire fee, up to 100 people).

Gardens and courtyards - best for weddings, drinks receptions and photo-led events

Greenery gives a natural backdrop for photography and a calm escape from the street. Walled and courtyard gardens offer privacy; larger garden lawns handle bigger receptions. Best for 20 to 250 guests

Top pick: OmVed Gardens, Highgate - from £750, up to 120 guests, a botanical, sustainability-minded setting for weddings and dinners. For value in East London, The Garden Atrium at Shoreditch Gardens starts from £110 (up to 250 people).

Patios and terraces - best for team outings and accessible, step-free events

Paved, floor-level spaces are easy for guests to move around and simple to set up for catering or a performance. Best for 20 to 50 guests

Top pick: Outdoor Terrace at The Oxford Market - from £100, up to 50 guests. The Private Outdoor Patio at Uncommon Fulham (from £900, up to 50 people) is a chic coworking terrace with outdoor packages for team days.

Riverside, waterfront and boats - best for standout parties and weddings

A Thames backdrop or an open-air riverside yard gives an event a sense of place. Best for 100 to 900 guests on land, or a private boat for a moving celebration.

Top pick: Summer | Crown & Anchor at Between the Bridges, South Bank - from £4,000, up to 200 guests. Vinegar Yard near London Bridge holds up to 900 people (from £2,000), and West End On The Thames offers boat hire and river cruises (from £7,000 hire fee).

Park lawns and large event spaces - best for festivals, brand activations and big functions

Open, licensed ground for the largest events, with room for marquees, staging and vehicle access. Best for 400 to 2,000+ guests. Top pick: York Lawns at Regent's Events - from £5,000, up to 2,000 guests across landscaped Regent's Park grounds. Bowling Green at Battersea Park Venues holds up to 1,000 people (from £2,350).

Which are the most affordable outdoor venues in London?

You do not need a big budget to hire outdoors. Several London spaces start well under £300, charging a modest hire fee or minimum spend rather than a premium buyout. These are the lowest-entry options currently on Tagvenue, cheapest first.

Best areas for outdoor venues in London, and why

Area shapes both the setting and the price. Here is where each type clusters and who it suits.

Cute private gardens for a wedding in London

A "cute" wedding garden usually means one thing: a private, secluded green space with character, where the setting does the decorating for you. London has walled gardens, courtyards and botanical spaces that fit exactly that brief, from intimate ceremonies to garden receptions. Check the venue's ceremony licence and wet-weather back-up before you book.

  • St Ethelburga's Bedouin Tent & Garden, City of London - from £65, up to 30 guests. A tucked-away walled garden with a permanent Bedouin tent, ideal for an intimate, characterful ceremony or blessing.
  • The Sunken Garden, London - from £115, up to 400 guests. A characterful sunken green space that scales from an intimate ceremony to a larger garden reception.
  • OmVed Gardens, Highgate - from £750, up to 120 guests. A lush, botanical, sustainability-minded garden that photographs beautifully for ceremonies and receptions.
  • Court Yard at Ironmongers' Hall, City of London - from £800, up to 40 guests. A secluded courtyard at a Grade II* listed Livery hall, elegant and private for a small, refined wedding.
  • Camley Street Natural Park, King's Cross - from £3,600, up to 200 guests. A wild, waterside nature reserve for couples who want a green, off-beat setting in central London.

A common request on wedding forums is a "cute central London pub with a private garden" - for that, pair this list with garden party venues and beer gardens in London. To browse everything wedding-ready outdoors, see outdoor wedding venues in London.

Are there outdoor venues for live music in London?

Yes, but permissions vary. Beer gardens, yards and purpose-built event spaces are the most likely to allow live bands or a DJ and later finishes, while gardens attached to residential areas often have noise limits and earlier curfews. Always confirm the sound policy, curfew and whether an entertainment licence is needed when you enquire. These outdoor spaces are set up for amplified sound:

What should you check before booking an outdoor venue?

Outdoor events have a few extra considerations. Confirm these with the venue before you book.

  • Wet-weather cover: an indoor room, marquee or covered terrace as back-up, and whether it costs extra.
  • Heating and season: covered or heated terraces extend rooftop and garden use into spring and autumn.
  • Noise and curfew: sound limits, amplified-music rules and the latest finish time.
  • Catering and BBQ: in-house catering, BBQ packages, or whether outside caterers and open cooking are allowed.
  • Access: step-free routes and load-in for suppliers, staging or equipment.
  • Power and facilities: outdoor power, lighting and toilets for larger or park-based events.

What activities can you add to an outdoor event?

Fresh-air games and entertainment lift any outdoor event, from birthdays to family reunions. A few reliable options:

  • Lawn games: croquet or giant Jenga to get guests mingling.
  • Interactive stations: kite-making or flower crowns that double as keepsakes.
  • Family competitions: three-legged or sack races with small prizes.
  • Treasure hunts: clues around the garden for exploration and teamwork.
  • Live music: a band or soloist by day; magicians or puppeteers for children.
  • Film under the stars: a screen, blankets and popcorn for evening events.
  • Chill-out zones: shaded seating around a fire pit or under festoon lights.

Booked Roof Terrace at The Solo Kitchen & Bar
5.0
I hosted my 35th birthday party at Solo Kitchen & Bar and honestly couldn’t recommend it more highly. When I was searching for venues, I wanted somewhere that felt special and flexible without the huge price tag and corporate feel that so many private event spaces have. Solo was exactly that. We had exclusive use of the upstairs space, including the rooftop terrace, and it worked brilliantly for a large birthday celebration. One of the biggest reasons I chose the venue was its flexibility with the weather. The rooftop and side windows are fully retractable, so you can adapt the space throughout the day depending on conditions. We were able to have the terrace open and enjoy the sunshine, while knowing we had a great indoor space if needed. The setting is also surprisingly beautiful. Although it’s right on Bethnal Green Road, the venue sits above the park, so you’re surrounded by the canopy of mature trees and greenery. What really impressed me was how peaceful it felt. I was initially worried about traffic noise, but once you’re upstairs with the doors open and music playing, you barely notice the road at all. Most importantly, the team were exceptional. Leo, Georgina and Aisha went above and beyond from the first enquiry right through to the event itself. They were warm, accommodating, responsive and genuinely cared about making the day a success. By the end of the process they felt more like family than venue staff. Nothing was too much trouble, and having that level of support made organising a 50+ person event feel remarkably stress-free. The food, drinks, atmosphere and service were all fantastic, and so many guests commented afterwards on what a great venue it was. If you’re looking for a venue for a birthday, engagement party, work event or private celebration in East London, I genuinely don’t think you’ll find many places that offer this combination of flexibility, atmosphere, value and genuinely wonderful people.

Booked N6 Event Space at 3Locks Industrial Brewery Riverside Views
5.0
Susanna was absolutely amazing throughout the entire booking process, from when I went to view the venue to being there throughout the event to ensure everything ran smoothly. Her communication was excellent and she really made the experience easy and enjoyable. The venue is a hidden gem within Camden, my guests and I had a fantastic time and I would definitely recommend this for private functions. We had no issues with the toilets and in fact, were very pleased that we had toilet availability for the guests in a busy location. The setup was great and Susanna really goes above and beyond to ensure the event goes exactly as planned.

Booked Voysey at Mary Ward House
4.8
I valued the really good communication with the venue right from my first enquiry, and being allocated an event manager for all queries and arrangements. I booked this venue because it has beautiful indoor and outdoor space - an elegant light airy room with access to a spacious walled courtyard which seems like a secret treasure in central London. And I also chose it because I could bring in an outside caterer. All the staff at the venue on the day were friendly, helpful and flexible and did everything to make the party a success. I'm so glad I found this venue.

Booked Upper Terrace at Cinnamon Kitchen
4.8
I had planned a surprise birthday at the anise bar in cinnamon kitchen and it was amazing! The food was great and especially all the staff! They were extremely helpful and looked after us all so well on the night so thank you to them and the manager on that night. I can’t remember all the names (I’m so sorry) but one that I do recall is Amaan who was so great (there was another waiter on that night and he was amazing too!). The anise bar area is so spacious and was well set up prior to our arrival. They have a music system as well which was great because we could play our own music. The food was extremely good and the staff super warm and welcoming! I would recommend having an event at cinnamon kitchen if you are thinking about it!

Booked Terrace at Stephen Street Terrace
5.0
I arranged my company's annual Summer Party and after looking for many venues in central London I found this hidden gem close to Tottenham Court Road thanks to Steve. The venue had everything we wished for – absolutely delicious food, beautiful interior, a large dance floor and big outside space. It was a perfect venue to finish off our day that started with a treasure hunt around central London. Florentina did an excellent job from the moment we booked the party, until it finished on the night, making sure we all had a good time. The service and staff was excellent and I really have nothing at all to complain about. I cannot recommend Stephen St Terrace enough!!

I have to say a Big Thankyou to you both for making us feel so welcomed .... right from the first call by Nicholas he was so. Calm and welcoming. He was very helpful and very reasonable with what we were looking to do in the party . On the day, Thomas was very helpful very kind with everything... we had a long journey , we were lost , baby was crying , so many things were going wrong but Thomas was so kind and helped with everything... Being an event organiser I goto so many venues where it’s all about there venue, their walls, furniture, they restrict you from doing almost everything but here we felt so welcomed and relaxed so we could actually enjoy the space All my guests Loved the venue! They looked at prices and I will be recommending this to most of my friends. Would definitely try to comeback for our next event. Kind regards
