The faster, the better, and you will be sure that your favourite spot will be available!

We recommend contacting the venue manager to discuss the details of the hire. Each private venue will have different policies regarding external beverages or catering. However, if you are planning a party on a budget, it is a good option to explore! There are many great BYO party venues in Melbourne, so use our search filters to find one that allows you to provide our own drinks or food.

Your Guide to Hiring Birthday Party Venues in Melbourne

Types of birthday spots you can choose in Melbourne

Each type below covers what it is best for, the guest counts it handles, a real price, and a verified top pick.

Bars and cocktail bars – best for 21st to 40th birthdays, 40 to 150 people

Book a bar when you want a standing, drinks-led party with a late finish and no catering to organise. Most Melbourne bars run on minimum spend, so there is no hire fee. Expect around $1,000 minimum spend for a bar space holding 50 to 110 people.

  • Top pick: Cocktail Bar at La Di Da, Melbourne CBD – from $1,500 minimum spend per session, up to 80 people, rated 4.9/5 from 149 reviews. The same venue's Basement takes 150 people from $2,500 minimum spend, and the Main Room scales to 350 people from $3,000.
  • Also consider: Entire Venue at Concrete Boots Bar – from $1,000 minimum spend, up to 150 people, rated 4.9/5. Exclusive use of a whole bar for the price of a single function room is unusual at that capacity.

Rooftop venues – best for summer birthdays and golden-hour photos, 20 to 220 people

Rooftop venues in Melbourne average $3,000 minimum spend per event, with a range of $1,000 to $5,500 minimum spend, $37 to $100 per person, or $55 to $250 hire fee per hour. Most sit in the CBD and Southbank, which keeps them accessible for guests travelling in.

Four things decide whether a rooftop works for a birthday:

  • View and time of day. North and west-facing terraces get the sunset. Book a 5pm to 8pm session in summer for golden hour, or an evening slot for the city-lights view.
  • Privacy level. "Reserved area" means a roped section of a working bar; "exclusive hire" means the roof is yours. The price gap is large – The Rooftop – Reserved Area at The Emerald Peacock starts from $21 per person for up to 220 people, while Entire Venue at Goldilocks Rooftop Bar is from $8,000 minimum spend for 90 people.
  • Weather backup. Ask whether the indoor space is included or charged separately. Two Hands Rooftop Bar in Abbotsford solves this by listing both: Rooftop Indoors from $1,000 minimum spend for 80 people, Rooftop Outdoors from $700 for 30 people, and the Entire Rooftop from $2,500 for 110 people.
  • Accessibility. Lift access is not universal on Melbourne rooftops, particularly above older pubs. Confirm it before you invite older relatives or anyone using a wheelchair.

Function rooms – best for seated milestones and mixed-age guest lists, 80 to 200 people

Function rooms in Melbourne average $2,200 minimum spend per event, ranging $1,200 to $3,000 minimum spend, $46 to $89 per person, or $300 to $1,100 hire fee per event. Choose one when you need a door that closes, your own bar, room for speeches, and a space that suits grandparents and toddlers alongside friends.

Private dining rooms – best for 30th, 40th and 50th dinners, 12 to 80 people

Private dining rooms for birthdays average $2,000 minimum spend per event in Melbourne, from $38 to $88 per person. Book one when the birthday is a long dinner rather than a party, and food quality matters more than a dance floor.

Pubs and beer gardens – best for casual afternoon parties and family mixes, 30 to 150 people

Pub spaces average $1,000 minimum spend and typically hold 60 to 80 people. Beer gardens are the most flexible option for a daytime birthday with kids in tow, and they usually price per person rather than by hire fee.

Warehouses, studios and blank spaces – best for themed and decorated parties, 15 to 150 people

Book a blank space when you want to bring your own decor, caterer, DJ or theme. These almost always price by the hour, which makes them the cheapest option for a three-hour party.

Unusual and quirky venues – best for a birthday people remember, 15 to 600 people

Unique event spaces in Melbourne average $3,000 minimum spend per event, from $1,000 to $5,000, or $100 to $250 hire fee per hour.

Which Melbourne areas are best for a birthday party, and why?

Prices vary by more than 4x across Melbourne suburbs. Abbotsford averages $500 minimum spend; Windsor and South Melbourne average $3,000. Pick the area on transport and price, not just vibe.

Birthday spots and milestones to match

Kids birthday parties – 20 to 120 children

Kids birthday venues in Melbourne average $110 hire fee per hour, from $80 to $190 per hour, $400 to $2,500 minimum spend, or $25 to $45 per person. Hourly hire dominates because parents want a two or three-hour window with a hard finish. Melbourne splits into two kinds of kids' venues: activity-led spaces where the entertainment is built in, and blank spaces you decorate and cater yourself.

Activity-led:

Blank spaces and function rooms:

Teenagers – 16th and 18th birthdays, 30 to 150 people

Teen parties need a dry venue or a controlled bar, a sound system, and somewhere parents can wait or supervise. Hourly-hire studios work best. Gather Spot at Gather Spot Party Hub from $200 per hour for up to 150 people, or Latrobe Golf Club in Alphington from $500 hire fee per day for up to 240 people.

Adults with friends – 40 to 150 people

Adult birthday venues average $1,250 minimum spend, from $500 to $2,300, or $21 to $40 per person. Bars on minimum spend give the best value here because your group covers the spend on drinks anyway. Sundeck Private Function at The Purple Emerald Lounge Bar and Main Bar at Bonny from $3,500 minimum spend for 80 people are the two most-booked.

Family and mixed-generation parties – 30 to 250 people

Prioritise seating, step-free access, an early finish and parking. Pub function rooms and bayside venues handle this best: The Bayview Room at Brighton Beach Hotel from $4,000 minimum spend for 250 people, or Alfresco Area at Olinda Tea House from $1,000 minimum spend for 60 people, rated 4.8/5 and noted by guests for no hidden charges.

Work birthdays and team celebrations – 20 to 100 people

Book something close to the office with a per-person food package so the spend is predictable and easy to expense. Beer Garden at Aviary Hotel at $26 per person, Sweatshop Basement Bar & Yard at Seamstress at $21 per person for 100 people, or The Lounge at The Cluster at $1,650 hire fee for 80 people.

Booked Hasti Bala and Deck Bar at The Carlton Club Hotel
5.0
We recently hired the Hasti Bala Room for a private event with around 50 guests, and it was absolutely perfect. The room has such a funky, unique feel and created an amazing atmosphere from the moment everyone arrived. The staff were incredibly friendly, helpful, and made the whole night run so smoothly. The sound system was fantastic, and it had everyone on the dance floor all night. The vibe was exactly what we were hoping for. I honestly couldn't fault the experience. Everything exceeded our expectations, and we received so many compliments from our guests about the venue. I would absolutely hire the Hasti Bala Room again for a future event and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a fun, stylish space for a celebration.

Beautiful venue with a wonderful team and delicious gin 💗 Held my birthday party in the private room upstairs, and my guests raved about how lovely it was there. I got the grazing boards and they were delicious - so well stocked and such good value too! Fraser and the team were great to deal with. Highly recommend!

Booked Apartment 26 at Anton Venoir Interiors

The venue is amazing. You very much feel like you have stepped into Paris. Tony was so helpful with menu changes etc as this was for my daughter’s 16th. All the girls had a great time and the high tea dinner was all home made and divine. It was a fantastic venue for a 16th birthday party. The girls got to dress up and basically have their very own restaurant with service. Highly recommend.

Booked The Island Bar at Death or Glory
4.8
D.O.G. was the perfect venue for our event. We hosted a birthday party in the Island bar upstairs and had DJs play. The sound system was good for the space, we brought our own DJ decks - they had a booth to setup in. They were super helpful during planning and we went with a minimum spend so our guests had the freedom to buy whatever drinks or food they wanted. We easily made minimum spend with 40 guests.

Couldn't Desrcibe how beatiful, inclusive and accompanying this venue is. Had a themed graduation party and the team helped me adjust, answered all my questions and was always kind and helpful in all scenarios. I felt secure, confident and safe in this large and work of art venue. Couldn't recommend it more to not visit this place and book your fantasy party here. The space is also extremely flexible, acting as a lounge, providing sensnory safe spaces, or can be an upbeat artsy bar. Obsessed and the staff were amazing the whole night :).

Booked Cocktail Bar at La Di Da

Hosted my 25th here at the Champagne Lounge on Saturday night. From the get-go, Barry has been absolutely amazing. Trying to get a location so close to Christmas time is always tricky as everything usually gets booked out, but Barry called some people and managed to free up the date I wanted for the Champagne Lounge. They also gave us free house drinks at the consultation too, which was so lovely especially since I was already set on booking the venue already! Another thing I really appreciated was that I was allowed to bring in some food (that wasn't similar to anything on their menu) to my function without any extra charge as long as I paid the minimum spend, unlike some establishments which I always find super annoying. They even served this food too and made it very lovely on serving platters. On the night, Hailey was the host for my party, briefing me on everything and double checking exactly what I needed. She was so helpful and lovely (also girl looks like a model!). The interior looked so nice with the plants and lighting which was exactly what I was expecting for my party! The food was very good and very worth the money I paid, from what I could tell all the options I ordered were so yummy. The wait staff were also very lovely and the bartender (sorry I forgot your name!) was an absolutely g, had lovely service the entire night and he shouted me a birthday shot too! All of the staff made me feel very reassured on my day which allowed me to focus on socialising with my friends and having fun! All of my friends who came also commented on how lovely the venue was, and I highly recommended LaDiDa to them if they ever wanted a place to host a function. Will continue to keep recommending LaDiDa and how great hosting a function there is!

Booked Beer Garden at Aviary Hotel

I had my 21st birthday party here on Friday and I can't express how much I loved the Aviary Hotel as a venue. Savannah and the rest of the staff were very supportive, helpful and friendly and they ensured everything ran smoothly without any hiccups. The beer garden itself was a beautiful intimate area for around 60 guests and was the perfect place for sitting down, chatting and meeting new people whilst also having space for dancing as the night went on. The selection of wine and beer on the tab was great and the grazing table had something for everyone. I can't thank Savanah and the team at Aviary enough for making my 21st so amazing!
