The room was as described and was perfectly suitable for our needs. As a party of less than 30 we paid for a bar person, and he did brilliantly for us. The quality and substance of the food was excellent. It was delivered swiftly and very efficiently by the bar man and one other - and it was surprising how quickly they did this. Our guests complimented the food. We had purchased fizz for the group, and this with the room set up was done well. The room was clean pleasant and the staff appeared to try to do everything to make my birthday party go well. We really had an excellent time.
A month before the party I was worried by lack of response to emails - and I think staff were having to deal with those for a lot of events while working in the bar. About 2 to 3 week before the party this changed and every thing was done well. I paid a deposit, the bar wages and an advance of about 2/3 of the cost. I worked out the remainder and agreed with manager Klaudia that I would pay the remaining £467 on the day. Except on the day it went up to £521 with no explanation, and then the barman said it was actually £540. I paid £521 with good will because we had a lovely time, and I didn't want to sour it - but I suspect that not everyone would have paid the extra.

The room is beautiful and is a great location in Oxford. The food is good quality.
Once the Blue room had been booked, the staff no longer responded to emails within a reasonable timeframe. They took at least two weeks to respond to emails despite receiving follow up emails and never sent a holding email to say they would get back to me. They wouldn’t answer my questions and sent contradicting information so I had to go to the venue before the event to ensure all information had been taken into account. On the day guests made comments in staff appearing to not want to be there. Despite informing staff on where guests with allergies/intolerances were seated, my niece still received food that she has a severe intolerance too. We were told that we could stay in the Blue room into the evening but the staff tried to close at 9pm. My guests then spoke to staff and agreed we could stay until 11pm - however they still closed the room at 10pm. The team need to communicate more effectively because this contradicting information makes them appear incredibly unprofessional. I had high hopes for St Aldates having had positive experiences when having drinks/meals downstairs. However, I would no longer recommend someone book a larger event there, especially a wedding reception.

The actual pub staff were all lovely and our dedicated bar man was great! Good sized room and had everything we needed.
Intitial contact when making the booking was very good but once booking was made it was very difficult to get hold of someone to ask questions (again, actual pub staff were great). Would have appreciated being able to set the room up earlier than the 10 minutes before but this wasn’t allowed despite being told no bookings before us.
