Born in The Side, just a short walk from our hotel, Admiral Lord Collingwood joined the Navy at the age of twelve and gave it his life. Wherever he went, it is said, he dropped acorns from his pocket so that in the future there would always be good oak trees to turn into battleships. In a brutal profession, he was a remarkable visionary, avoiding physical punishment for his men. As an admiral in 1805, he lead the English fleet at the Battle of Trafalgar. Locals say that Collingwood, who has a street named after him just round the corner from our hotel, deserves as much credit for keeping the French and Spanish invasion at bay as Nelson.
