Joseph Cowen was a 19th century entrepreneur, politician, publisher and philanthropist known locally as ‘The Blaydon Brick’, in tribute to his brickworks and his stocky build. Cowen was a one-man typhoon of activity, creating social housing and channelling his wealth into grand projects like the Tyne Theatre & Opera House, which was designed to be a ‘Theatre for everyone’. As proprietor of the Newcastle Chronicle, he fought for the poorest members of society and turned the paper into ‘The Times of the North’. As MP for Newcastle, he shocked his fellow parliamentarians at Westminster by refusing to tone down his Geordie accent to fit in.
