Community halls and centres – the cheapest way to book

Community centres are the single cheapest venue type in East London at around £60 per hour on dry hire, and they usually include tables, chairs and kitchen access. Trade-off: you arrange your own catering, décor and often your own bar licence.

Top picks: Main Hall at Osmani Centre near Whitechapel, 80 people from £70 per hour, East Ham Main Hall, 500 people from £100 per hour with a stage, air conditioning and on-site parking; and Old Parish Hall at Core Clapton, 200 people from £150 per hour.

Pub function rooms – the best value for parties

Pub function rooms in East London average £550 minimum spend per event, and many charge a flat day rate instead. Most come with a private bar, sound system and often their own toilets, which is what makes them the default for birthdays and work drinks.

Bars and minimum-spend venues – zero hire fee

If your guests will be buying drinks anyway, a minimum-spend bar removes the room charge entirely. East London bars average £1,000 minimum spend for 50 to 200 people.

Top picks: First Floor Private Hire at The Fox, Shoreditch, a Supervenue for 100 people from £750 minimum spend; 1st floor private hire at Horse and Groom near Old Street, 120 people from £1,000 minimum spend; and Blue Bar at Lord Napier Star in Hackney Wick, 80 people from £1,250 minimum spend, rated 4.8/5. See more pub venues in East London.

Creative studios and blank canvases – best for shoots, launches and full control

East London's warehouse and studio stock is what makes the area cheaper than central London for creative work. Blank canvases average £250 per hour, but smaller studios sit well below that.

Top picks: Studio at Prana Voice in Haggerston, 45 people from £60 per hour; Holywell Studio in Shoreditch, 40 people from £90 per hour; Wellness studio + event space at She's Lost Control near Homerton, 40 people from £96 per hour; and plantroom in Bow, 200 people from £135 per hour and rated 4.8/5 for value at that size. For larger productions, The Warehouse at Studio Spaces in Wapping holds 600 people from £2,000 per day.

Dry hire venues – best for weddings and budget catering

Dry hire in East London averages £99 per hour, £77 to £150 per hour typically, or £1,450 to £6,600 per day. You get an empty room and bring in your own caterer, drinks and suppliers, which is the biggest single lever on total cost for a wedding or large family event.

Outdoor space, terraces and gardens

Outdoor space in East London is mostly pub gardens and courtyard terraces rather than dedicated rooftops, and it is usually included in the hire rather than priced separately – which makes it one of the better-value features to filter for. The Garden Room with Garden at The Wilds in Barking takes 100 people from £70 per hour with the garden included. Filter for Garden or Rooftop on the results page to see current availability, and always agree to a wet-weather fall-back in writing before booking.

Cheap East London Areas

Waltham Forest, Barking and Newham are the cheapest parts of East London, with rooms from £25 to £100 per hour. Shoreditch and Hoxton are the most expensive, at £80 to £300 per hour. The gap between them is roughly threefold for the same guest count.

Waltham Forest – cheapest overall

Covers Leyton, Leytonstone and Walthamstow. Community studios and pub function rooms on flat day rates, well below anything closer in.

Best for birthdays, workshops and family parties where guests are happy to travel out on the Overground.

Barking and Newham – best value at scale

The only part of East London where you can book 100 to 500 people at under £100 per hour, usually with parking and kitchen access.

Best for weddings, christenings, Nikkahs and cultural events over 200 people.

Hackney Borough – deepest supply of small spaces

Covers Clapton, Homerton, Haggerston, Hackney Downs and Hackney Wick, plus Hackney and Stoke Newington. More sub-60-capacity studios and neighbourhood pubs than anywhere else in East London.

Best for workshops, wellness events and parties under 60 people. See pubs with function rooms in Hackney.

Dalston – best for late nights

Modern pubs and nightclub spaces that scale from small gatherings to 200 people, with a licence that runs later than most of East London.

Best for club nights, DJ sets and parties that run past midnight. See function rooms in Dalston.

Stratford and Bow – best large blank canvases

Canal-side warehouses and event spaces around Hackney Wick, at rates central London cannot match for the square footage.

  • plantroom, Bow – 200 people, from £135 per hour, rated 4.8/5, described by users as excellent value for the size
  • The Ping Pong Parlour at Bat & Ball, Stratford – 50 people, from £1,000 minimum spend, three minutes from Stratford Station

Best for launches, exhibitions and creative socials. See function rooms in Stratford.

Tower Hamlets – widest spread of price and scale

Covers Whitechapel, Spitalfields and Wapping. Ranges from the cheapest community halls in East London to 600-capacity warehouses.

Best for events that need scale or a City-adjacent postcode without a City price.

Redbridge and Havering – big rooms, small budgets

The outer edge of East London, where large function halls stay under £150 per hour.

Best for large guest lists on a tight budget, particularly where guests drive.

Shoreditch and Hoxton – most expensive, best connected

The densest supply of studios, warehouses and private bar rooms, and the highest rates in East London. Still below central London, but expect to pay for the Old Street and Liverpool Street location.

Best for launches, press events and parties where guests come straight from work. See pubs with function rooms and small party venues in Shoreditch.

Booked Grove Green Room at Heathcote & Star
5.0
Our organiser Laura was happy to chat with us and answer any questions we had. The bar manager Martin was amazing on the day, helping us to rearrange the furniture in the room and confirming where we would like the food and drink. We were given access to the room early in the day so we had plenty of time to decorate. The day ran really smoothly and the bar in the room was managed really well. The room has a great character to it and the hallway and staircase is decorated really nicely. The space was perfect for 100 people and we were also given a reserved section of the garden. The food was lovely and everyone complimented the venue on how many portions there were. Overall we had a great time and would highly recommend this venue to anyone wanting a good party!

Booked 118 Brick Lane at 118 The Lane
5.0
We hired 118 The Lane for my business’s 10 year birthday celebration and honestly couldn’t have been happier with our choice. The team couldn’t have been more helpful or friendly from start to finish, and having the whole venue to ourselves made the evening feel really special. The venue itself is awesome - such a great space with brilliant decor and a really fun atmosphere! The staff were all so lovely, welcoming and fun, and they really helped make the night run smoothly. The food was also amazing and went down so well with our guests. We had the best time and would absolutely recommend 118 The Lane for a private event. Thank you so much for having us!

Booked Entire Venue at Hatcham House
4.7
I recently hired this venue for my birthday party. The stylish bar is a fantastic standout feature to the venue. The clean, well-maintained toilet facilities complemented the venue's style and the space layout made for a fun and memorable celebration. There was plenty of room for guests (50) to relax, dance, and enjoy themselves, and the atmosphere was absolutely perfect for the occasion. The staff were outstanding — friendly, organised, and incredibly helpful throughout the entire process. They made the setup effortless and were always available if we needed anything on the day. Their genuine care made the celebration run smoothly from start to finish. Everyone who attended commented on how great the venue was. I highly recommend this venue. I’d gladly book it again!

Booked Entire Restaurant at Angel Venue
4.7
Venue was really lovely, there's a recently done-up outside area too (though we didn't use this on the day as it was 30 degrees outside) - lots of guests even complimented how nice the venue was. Alex was really helpful and responsive before the event, making sure the setup was as we needed. We had 70 people there which was cozy but fine and there was AC. Everything was really clean including the toilets. It was useful that there's a bar as well as we didn't want to offer alcohol ourselves, so guests could just buy whatever they wanted. Plenty of fridge space downstairs.

Booked The Fishing Smack at Boathouse Studios, Barking
5.0
I would like to thank Carole for allowing me to have my special day at this really beautiful venue! We have created memories that will last a lifetime. Me and my wacky family have been pestering you for the last couple months bombarding you with questions and requirements for the ceremony during all types of unsociable hours and you handled us with such class! You gave us your time and made us feel important... for this I am humbled. In a place that is becoming increasingly more gentrified boathouse creative studios is a true community gem! A place that embraces a new Barking whilst keeping true to it's heritage. All for a price that is literally peanuts in comparison to the overall value. loosing my mother to cancer not too long ago my family has been overwhelmed with grief. This was the first day everyone cried happy tears and you were responsible for that Carole. I thank you for being a part of this beautiful journey. Love, Ali

The managers Jenine and Gerald were great; everything from communication to support on the day was friendly, helpful and on point. The space was excellent for what we needed and having the freedom to decorate it and rearrange furniture meant that we could really put our own stamp on it for our event.
