Salon Space at The Commons
About this space
he 550 Studio is the main event venue at The Commons, a well-loved community living room in the heart of Hayes Valley, San Francisco. It's our largest and most versatile room — an open space for up to 100 guests that adapts to almost any gathering: set it with rows for a talk or presentation, push tables together into one long banquet table for a dinner, or clear the floor for live music and celebrations.
The room has a warmth you can't stage — lived-in, comfortable, and unmistakably homely. It's hosted thousands of salons, talks, workshops, and creative nights for the likes of Notion, Stanford, Substack, TEDx, SF Zen Center, and the SF Mayor's Office.
Perfect for: talks & fireside chats, philosophy salons, book tours & launches, live music & jam sessions, workshops & classes, team offsites, community dinners & banquets, and private celebrations.
Facilities: two Bluetooth PA speakers and two hard-wired mics (handheld or on stands), a projector (AirCast/HDMI) plus a wall-mounted TV, two adjustable standing desks for food & drinks, chairs, footstools, rugs, and whiteboards, fast WiFi, printer access, and a private bathroom inside the studio. Instruments (keyboard, acoustic guitars, electric drums), meditation cushions, and yoga mats are on hand too. Our Space Operations Manager is on-site to help with setup, tech, and wrap-up, and every booking includes a free hour before and after to set up and break down.
Location: 550 Laguna Street, Hayes Valley, San Francisco — steps from Patricia's Green and the neighborhood's best cafés, restaurants, and galleries, and a short walk from Civic Center BART & Muni.
Optional add-on spaces are available to extend your event: a Solar-Punk Library & Living Room (65 guests), a Moroccan Astrology Lounge, a Wabi-Sabi zen nook, and an underground "Hogwarts" Study Hall (40 guests).

Host rules
• No smoking or vaping anywhere in the building.
• Please treat the space with care — it's a lived-in community home. Any damage to the space, furniture, or equipment may result in an additional charge.
• Food and non-alcoholic drinks are welcome. Alcohol is permitted for private events only, served responsibly and at your discretion (guests must be 21+).
• Keep noise at respectful levels — we're in a residential neighborhood. Please keep doors closed during amplified music and wind down sound by your event's end time.
• Your booking includes one free hour before and after your event for setup and breakdown. Please start and end on time so the next host can begin.
• Leave the space as you found it: clear tables, bag your trash and place it in the bins provided, and return furniture, rugs, and equipment to their original spots.
• No confetti, glitter, open flames, or anything adhered to the walls. Battery tea lights and freestanding candles in holders are fine.
• Well-behaved dogs are welcome; please clean up after them.
• The building's front door should stay closed and secure — please don't prop it open or share entry codes.
• Children must be supervised by an adult at all times.
• Our on-site Space Operations Manager is here to help with setup, tech, and wrap-up. Please follow their guidance on equipment and building access.
• Respect other guests, neighbors, and the community — harassment or unsafe behavior will end the booking.
