Two things move the price in Birmingham more than anything else: the day of the week and the time of day.

What to add to the hire fee before you compare venues

The advertised price is rarely the total. Add these up for each shortlisted venue and compare the totals, not the headline:

• Staffing and security, where the venue requires it for a private event

A packaged venue can carry a higher headline number and still work out cheaper once staffing, furniture and food are already in the price.

If outdoor space matters to your party, look for venues with a rooftop, terrace, garden or courtyard. Rooftop and terrace spaces can work particularly well for drinks-led celebrations, while gardens and courtyards may suit more relaxed daytime events.
