Absolutely! Here are some helpful tips for hiring an event space in Edinburgh!

  • Determine your budget - Before looking for a party hall, decide on your budget. This way, you'll determine a reasonable price range that will help you narrow down your options and avoid overspending.
  • Know your guest list - Have a clear idea of how many guests you'll be inviting and their needs. This will help you choose a venue that can accommodate your group size and any special requirements. For example, if you're organising a birthday for your child, you might look for kids' party venues in Edinburgh!
  • Consider the location - Edinburgh has a range of function rooms for parties to choose from, but make sure that the one you will go for is convenient for your guests and has easy access to public transportation.
  • Ask about amenities - When considering a party venue, ask about any amenities they offer, such as catering, audio/visual equipment, and decor. This can help you save time and money on additional services.
  • Read reviews - Do research and read reviews from other customers to get an idea of their experiences with the party venues. This can help you make a final decision and avoid any surprises on the day of the event.
  • Visit the venue in person - If possible, visit the venue in person before booking. This will give you a better idea of the space and help you envision how your event will look. Will it be a luxurious party in Edinburgh's city centre or a laid-back garden bash at a patio?
  • Thoroughly read the contract - Ensure you understand the venue's terms and conditions before signing a contract. This includes details on payment, cancellation policies, and any restrictions on using the space.

Which areas of Edinburgh are best for parties?

Edinburgh’s main party areas offer different combinations of venue choice, atmosphere, transport and space.

  • New Town – for choice and central transport. George Street, Hanover Street, Queen Street and Picardy Place have a strong mix of hotel function rooms, cocktail bars and private party spaces, with Waverley station and St Andrew Square tram stop nearby. Browse party venues in New Town.
  • Old Town – for historic and distinctive spaces. Look around the Grassmarket, South Bridge, West Port and the Royal Mile for cellars, stone-walled rooms and characterful venues. The Cellar at Frankenstein’s, for example, holds up to 200 standing guests and has a stage and PA system.
  • Leith – for larger and less conventional spaces. The area includes independent function venues and working distilleries as well as bars and restaurants. The Distillery Bar at Port of Leith Distillery holds up to 150 standing guests, while Jig Room at Granary holds 80 and is licensed until 2am. Browse party venues in Leith.
  • West End, Haymarket and Broughton – for alternatives just outside the main Old Town/New Town clusters. These areas are worth checking for hotel function rooms, bars and larger event spaces when the central areas don’t suit your group or event format.

What does private hire actually mean in Edinburgh?

Tagvenue listings distinguish three levels of exclusivity. The label changes what your guests experience and what you pay.

For smaller parties, a private room can provide the privacy you need without the higher spend of exclusive hire. For larger celebrations, whole-venue hire gives you more control over the layout, music and guest experience.

Before booking, ask whether your group will share the entrance, bar, toilets or outdoor areas with other customers, and confirm which spaces are included in the hire.

Can you play your own music, bring a DJ or dance?

Many Edinburgh party venues allow DJs, your own music and dancing, but check the individual venue’s music policy and facilities before booking. Of 24 Tagvenue listings checked in 2026, all 24 allowed an external DJ, 20 allowed guests to play their own music and 21 listed no noise restrictions.

Before you book. Check:

How late can a party run in Edinburgh?

Most licensed Edinburgh party venues serve alcohol until 1:00am. Among the 21 licensed listings checked in 2026, 17 held a licence until 1:00am.

When comparing late-night venues, ask about the event finish time, last orders and music cut-off separately. They may not all be the same.

If you want guests to continue elsewhere afterwards, also consider late-night transport and proximity to other bars or clubs when choosing the area.

Can you bring your own food and drink?

Usually not for alcohol, sometimes for food. In the Edinburgh sample checked in 2026, only 4 of 24 listings allowed guests to bring their own alcohol, while 7 of 24 allowed external catering.

  • Bring your own alcohol – ask whether corkage applies and whether there are restrictions on what you can bring. Examples: The Whole Basement at The Melting Pot (Old Town, 35 standing), Event Space at Rogue (West End, 30 standing), Lind & Lime Gin Distillery and The Distillery Bar at Port of Leith Distillery (both Leith).
  • Dry hirecheck exactly what the hire includes, as furniture, staffing, glassware and cleaning may be charged separately.
  • External catering – confirm whether you can choose your own caterer and whether there are kitchen or preparation facilities. The Other Room at Dragonfly permits outside catering in the private space while supplying the bar itself. Some venues charge a buyout fee for this.
  • Food-only or alcohol-free venuessome spaces have restrictions that may affect the type of party you can hold.

If BYO is important to your budget, confirm the venue’s catering, alcohol and corkage policies before comparing the final cost with an inclusive package.

Where to find Edinburgh's most distinctive party spaces

If you want something beyond a standard bar or function room, Edinburgh has party spaces in historic buildings, working distilleries and unusual creative venues.

Unusual venues in Edinburgh

When should you book a party venue in Edinburgh?

Book as early as possible if your party falls during one of Edinburgh’s busiest event periods. Availability and pricing can change around major events, so always request a quote for your exact date.

  • August – Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Some venues become Fringe spaces or have limited availability during the festival, so confirm private-hire availability before committing to your date.
  • November and December – Christmas and Hogmanay. Seasonal packages and minimum spends may differ from standard listing prices, particularly for popular December dates.
  • June and July – graduation season. If you need a central private room during university graduation periods, check availability early.

Outside these periods, how far ahead you need to book depends on your group size, venue type, day of the week and how flexible you are on location. Whole-venue hire and fixed weekend dates generally give you fewer alternatives than a flexible private-room booking.

What should you check before booking a party venue in Edinburgh?

Before paying a deposit, confirm:

  1. Capacity and layout – check the capacity for your actual setup, whether seated, standing or mixed.
  2. Total cost – confirm the hire fee, minimum spend or per-person price and what is included.
  3. Privacy – establish whether you are booking a private room, semi-private area or the whole venue.
  4. Food and drinks – check catering options, drinks packages and whether external catering or BYO is allowed.
  5. Music and dancing – confirm whether you can bring a DJ, play your own music and whether there is suitable space for dancing.
  6. Finish time – check the event finish, last orders and music cut-off separately.
  7. Equipment – confirm what PA, speakers, microphones, screens or other AV equipment is included.
  8. Accessibility – check step-free access, accessible toilets and any other requirements for your guests.
  9. Transport – consider public transport, parking and how guests will get home after a late finish.
  10. Booking terms – check the deposit, payment schedule and cancellation or postponement policy.

Booked The Other Room at Dragonfly Cocktail Bar
5.0
Amazing venue, cosy feel and great vibe and ambiance. Yes I used that word! It was 35 of us and it felt busy and it would have been at smaller number as well. Finding a venue for this size of party wasn’t easy! Great bar at the back with excellent drinks The staff on the night were excellent and super friendly. We were helped and managed throughout the process by Alex who was amazing. He guided us every step of the way and responded to all queries promptly He was very accommodating of requirements. Staff helped and checked regularly on under 18 (the only venue that allowed us, with some restrictions) There was a good space for a table to place food and the place has lovely decor. We brought in extra lights, balloons and other stuff but the place doesn’t need much as it looks incredible already. Location is perfect as it’s very central so lots of options for transport I would definitely book it again

Booked Famous Five at Easter Road Stadium (Hibernian FC)
5.0
We had our wedding reception at Behind the Goals at Hibernian Football Club on Friday 3rd October, and it was absolutely perfect from start to finish. Our guests are still raving about the quality of the buffet, it was exceptional. The staff went above and beyond to make the day extra special, especially Melanie and Nicola, who were incredible throughout the planning and on the day itself. We hired a photo booth, flower wall, dance floor and DJ, and the team made sure everything was set up flawlessly, ready to host the party of our lives. The security team were super friendly, and the bar staff & other staff were outstanding having both bars open meant there was never a long queue for drinks, which all our guests appreciated. We brought along a lot of our own décor, and again, the staff went out of their way to make sure everything looked magical. The venue itself is truly stunning, even though we’re not Hibs fans, we couldn’t have imagined a more perfect setting for our celebration. We honestly couldn’t recommend Behind the Goals enough. It’s a magical venue with a fantastic team, and we’re absolutely delighted we chose it for our wedding reception. 💚

Booked Courtyard at Badger & Co
5.0
We hired the lower outdoor area for my wife’s birthday and I was delighted with the experience. The service was excellent, they served a delicious range of canapés that had been tailored to our requests and the dietary requirements of the guests. The whole team were friendly, fun, and professional. They set up the space perfectly for us and were a huge contribution to a very enjoyable night. The price was very reasonable. I would recommend Badger and Co highly for small private functions with a relaxed and fun atmosphere with a unique twist. We will certainly be back.

Booked IMAGINEX at YOTEL Edinburgh
5.0
This a fantastic place to hold a party. The event room is a perfect space and the 360 screens around the ceiling are a real highlight. All my guests loved the photo slide show on a loop. Importantly, James and his team were just amazing- they set up everything so when we arrived prepared to set up the balloons for the tables it was all done, the birthday cards up, drinks all ready.. we literally had nothing to do but relax and welcome our guests. Our buffet was set up at the agreed time and our cake brought out at the time suggested. James was there for the whole event making sure the tables were cleared and glasses taken away, I cannot thank him enough for all he did for us.

Booked Wee Tap at Hanover Tap, Edinburgh
5.0
My event couldn't go ahead at Hanover Tap because of emergency maintenance that was required the morning of the event, so I can't really comment on the venue itself, but I felt I needed to leave a review on how things were handled. Chris and the team were absolutely fantastic at handling this so last minute, I was immediately offered options including an alternative venue (The Chanter) which turned out great for us. A new booking, including the catering, was fully sorted under two hours after I was made aware there was an issue and I never felt in any way pushed towards a particular option out of refund/reschedule/move the event which I really appreciated. This could have been horribly stressful with a good 90% of guests having flown in from other countries for the event, but it was handled really, really well. Can't recommend the team highly enough based on how they handled an emergency, I think it's important to know when booking somewhere that anything going wrong would be well taken care of and that's certainly the case here.

Booked Dirty Martini at Le Monde Hotel
4.9
Kevin and the team at Le Monde were very attentive from start to finish with the plans for my son's 21st in The Dirty Martini. They did everything and more to ensure we had all the information we needed, and they were always happy to meet us at the venue beforehand for continued discussions about table and buffet set ups. On the evening they were amazing at helping us set up for the party without a hint of bother. The bar staff were incredibly helpful and the party could not have been better. I have been telling everyone that they should use this venue. It's central, great value, enclosed for your guests, there's lift access (great for granny to get in and out and for the youngsters to get direct entry to the club below afterwards.

Booked The Garden at Rabble
4.8
Just hosted my 21st birthday party here for 40 people. The Sales and Event Manager was incredible throughout the whole organisational process. When I arrived, all staff were super friendly and were fantastic at helping with a slightly broken cake as well as showing me the space for setting up decorations. Catering was incredible, all guests loved the food! Drinks were also delicious with a huge choice on the menu. Venue was also absolutely stunning , couldn't have found a nicer location for my birthday.
