Edinburgh’s main party areas offer different combinations of venue choice, atmosphere, transport and space.

• New Town – for choice and central transport. George Street, Hanover Street, Queen Street and Picardy Place have a strong mix of hotel function rooms, cocktail bars and private party spaces, with Waverley station and St Andrew Square tram stop nearby.
• Old Town – for historic and distinctive spaces. Look around the Grassmarket, South Bridge, West Port and the Royal Mile for cellars, stone-walled rooms and characterful venues. 
• Leith – for larger and less conventional spaces. The area includes independent function venues and working distilleries as well as bars and restaurants.
• West End, Haymarket and Broughton – for alternatives just outside the main Old Town/New Town clusters. These areas are worth checking for hotel function rooms, bars and larger event spaces when the central areas don’t suit your group or event format.

What does private hire actually mean in Edinburgh?

Tagvenue listings distinguish three levels of exclusivity. The label changes what your guests experience and what you pay.

• Private room – a separate room exclusively for your group, while the rest of the venue remains open to other customers. Example: The Other Room at Dragonfly
• Semi-private area – a reserved section of a larger bar, restaurant or venue, usually without complete separation from other guests. Example: Clubroom at Angel's Share Hotel
• Exclusive or whole venue hire – your group has the use of  the entire building for the agreed booking period. Example: Wee Tap at Hanover Tap

For smaller parties, a private room can provide the privacy you need without the higher spend of exclusive hire. For larger celebrations, whole-venue hire gives you more control over the layout, music and guest experience.

Before booking, ask whether your group will share the entrance, bar, toilets or outdoor areas with other customers, and confirm which spaces are included in the hire.

Can you play your own music, bring a DJ or dance?

Many Edinburgh party venues allow DJs, your own music and dancing, but check the individual venue’s music policy and facilities before booking. Of 24 Tagvenue listings checked in 2026, all 24 allowed an external DJ, 20 allowed guests to play their own music and 21 listed no noise restrictions. 

Before you book. Check:

• Bring your own DJ – confirms external DJs are permitted, but not that equipment is provided.
• PA system or speakers – confirms in-house sound. The Other Room at Dragonfly lists an integrated sound system with plug-in points for DJs and bands; The Ballroom at The Voodoo Rooms has a stage and projector.
• Dance floor – a dedicated dance floor is less common than DJ permission. 
• Ceilidh and live music – if you're planning either, check the available floor space, stage or PA facilities and any noise restrictions directly with the venue.

How late can a party run in Edinburgh?

Most licensed Edinburgh party venues serve alcohol until 1:00am. When comparing late-night venues, ask about the event finish time, last orders and music cut-off separately. They may not all be the same.

If you want guests to continue elsewhere afterwards, also consider late-night transport and proximity to other bars or clubs when choosing the area.

Can you bring your own food and drink?

When should you book a party venue in Edinburgh?

Book as early as possible if your party falls during one of Edinburgh’s busiest event periods. Availability and pricing can change around major events, so always request a quote for your exact date.

• August – Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Some venues become Fringe spaces or have limited availability during the festival, so confirm private-hire availability before committing to your date.
• November and December – Christmas and Hogmanay. Seasonal packages and minimum spends may differ from standard listing prices, particularly for popular December dates.
• June and July – graduation season. If you need a central private room during university graduation periods, check availability early.
