The space worked really well for the kind of event we were running. Having the main hall, the secondary room, and the kitchenette all within the same venue gave us the flexibility we needed to run sessions and networking simultaneously without things feeling cramped. The amount of space available for networking was a big deal for us and our attendees made great use of it throughout the day. We also really valued having staff on the ground. When we ran into an issue with the kitchen during the event, having someone there to help us resolve it quickly made a real difference. That kind of support is not something you can always count on and we genuinely appreciated it. In terms of what we would improve, honestly there is not much to flag. We felt the space and the offering were fair for the price and it delivered exactly what we needed on the day. We would absolutely consider Magdalen Hall for future editions and would not hesitate to recommend the venue to others. Thank you again for everything.

The Venue Location Cleaning staff lady Lady with a broken foot
I booked the venue because during my initial visit, the layout was perfect for my event and the staff came across as welcoming, helpful and genuinely passionate about supporting the local community. I was told it was a community hall and that the money from bookings helped keep the venue open and fund improvements. The event had around 30 guests, yet the security staff spent much of their time sitting on benches drinking Coca-Cola rather than standing at the entrance welcoming guests or actively monitoring the event. Staff were openly arguing amongst themselves about who should be doing what and I also witnessed members of staff speaking negatively about one another, including bar staff criticising security. During the show, a male member of the venue team came backstage smelling strongly of cannabis. This was completely inappropriate during a live event. What people do in their own time is their business, but don't walk into a professional event smelling strongly of cannabis. It showed a complete lack of professionalism and consideration for everyone attending. I also paid extra for the venue's 360 photo booth. Before the event, I was specifically told that safety poles would be placed around the 360 and that I needed to leave enough space for them. On the day, no safety barriers or poles were used at all, despite me planning my layout around this. My media team simply asked if some nearby chairs could be moved to prevent anyone accidentally backing into them while using the 360. Instead of addressing the safety concern, the member of staff operating it shrugged it off, said she hadn't put the chairs there and walked away behind the bar. I found it disappointing that a genuine safety concern was dismissed rather than addressed. After I later raised concerns with the venue, I was told the 360 operator claimed my media manager had made inappropriate comments about the women he works with. This was the first time I had ever heard such an allegation. It was never mentioned during the event or immediately afterwards and only surfaced after I submitted my complaint. My media manager works professionally with women at countless pageants, fashion shows and events and I have never witnessed or received any complaints about his conduct. From my perspective, the allegation was completely out of character and very difficult to believe. Another issue was the minimum bar spend. I had been informed there was a £200 minimum spend over the four-hour event. Before leaving, I specifically asked how far away we were from meeting it and was told it was only around £11 short, so I purchased additional drinks to cover the difference. Despite this, I later received an email attempting to charge me over £100, which was then reduced to £51 after I questioned it. This left me very confused about how the figures had been calculated. Throughout the event my media team recorded much of the day, and I was informed that members of the venue team and the 360 operator were making negative comments about contestants while they were on stage. My event is centred around empowering women, so hearing that members of the venue team were making remarks about those taking part was incredibly upsetting and unprofessional. As a thank you, I left flowers for a member of staff who had been helpful and who had a broken foot. Shortly afterwards, I overheard members of the team discussing giving the flowers to someone else and pretending they had bought them themselves. Whether intended as a joke or not, it left a poor impression. The professionalism of the venue staff throughout the event was disappointing. Many appeared uninterested, unapproachable and gave the impression they simply did not want to be there. I was also later told the venue had gone above and beyond by providing me with equipment. From my perspective, I did not receive anything beyond what I had booked and they still have my archway, which has never been mentioned or arrangements made for its return. Although I had booked the venue until midnight, my show finished around 10pm and I had intended to hold an after-party until approximately 11:30pm. Despite still being within my booking time and with guests still present, venue staff began dismantling my decorations before the event had finished. I found this extremely disrespectful to both myself and my guests. I chose not to raise any of these issues on the day because it was one of the biggest days for my organisation. The last thing I wanted was confrontation or arguments. The show had to go on. We even had our DJ cancel at the last minute, but we adapted and made the event a success despite the setback. That, however, had absolutely nothing to do with the lack of professionalism and integrity shown by the venue staff throughout the day. The venue itself is beautiful and that's exactly why I booked it. Sadly, the staff completely let it down. Based on my experience, I would never book Magdalen Hall again.
