Affordable venue types in Birmingham

Each section stands alone so you can compare the option that fits your event.

Event spaces and studios

Capacity: typically 70 to 250 guests. Prices: average minimum spend around £550 per event. Best for: friends’ parties, milestone birthdays, creative events and receptions. Digbeth’s converted studios and industrial spaces are the value picks here, and many allow external catering or your own decorations.

Bars with private rooms

Capacity: typically 120 to 175 guests. Prices: average minimum spend around £550 per event, often with no separate hire fee. Best for: after-work drinks, birthdays and casual celebrations. The minimum-spend model makes bars one of the cheapest routes for a sociable group, because your budget goes on drinks rather than room rental.

Pubs with function rooms

Capacity: around 150 guests. Prices: average minimum spend around £1,000 per event. Best for: relaxed work parties, family occasions and group meals. Expect a dedicated upstairs room, a well-stocked bar and food packages; ask the host about corkage if you want to bring your own.

Community halls and meeting rooms

Capacity: meeting rooms typically 50 to 100 guests; community halls scale larger. Prices: meeting rooms average around £1,200 hire fee per day; community rooms can start from as little as £15 to £30 per hour. Best for: workshops, classes, club meetings, christenings and budget family events. These are the lowest-cost spaces in the city per hour.

Banqueting and wedding halls

Capacity: 200 to 250 guests, some scaling higher. Prices: average hire fee around £7,260 per event for the largest halls, with per-head catering packages available. Best for: weddings, cultural celebrations and large banquets. Birmingham has strong value here for South Asian, Arabic and multicultural weddings, with dedicated dry-hire and catered options.

Which Birmingham areas have the best-value venues?

Location changes both price and character. Here is where to look and what each area is known for.

  • Digbeth – the creative and industrial quarter, home to converted studios, event spaces and quirky party venues. Strong value and easy to reach from New Street.
  • Jewellery Quarter – characterful pubs and bars with private rooms, good for birthdays and after-work drinks in a historic setting.
  • City Centre (Colmore Row and Brindleyplace) – the most central options, within 0.1 mile of the core, near New Street and Grand Central. Slightly higher rates, maximum convenience.
  • Up-and-coming areas – Deritend and West Bromwich tend to be cheaper per hour, so they are worth a look if budget is the priority.
  • Wider West Midlands – if you are flexible on location, affordable venues in Coventry and Solihull can stretch your budget further.

Find the right affordable venue for your event in Birmingham

Booking a party? Cheap party venues in Birmingham span bars, studios and pubs, and the cheapest usually run on a minimum spend rather than a hire fee. For a lively evening do, the Main Space at The Old Library in Digbeth is a well-rated pick with clear packages. If it is a birthday specifically, cheap birthday party venues with a private bar area work best; the Upstairs Private Event Space at The Actress & Bishop in the Jewellery Quarter is a strong-value option for a group who want their own room without a room-hire charge.

Need a private room rather than a whole venue? A function room in Birmingham gives you a dedicated space inside a larger pub, bar or hotel, which keeps costs down because you are only paying for the part you use. For tighter budgets, filter to cheap function rooms, and for groups under 50, small function rooms are the most economical, averaging around £70 hire fee per hour. Bennett's at Vagabond Birmingham on Colmore Row is a central choice for a smaller private function.

Working to a strict headcount? Small venues in Birmingham suit intimate gatherings of up to 50, such as baby showers, christenings and milestone dinners; Sovereign Studios is a top-rated intimate space. At the other end, large event venues handle 160 guests and up, and Birmingham's banqueting halls offer the best value at scale for weddings and cultural celebrations.

Cutting the bill down further? Three routes help. Minimum spend venues charge no separate hire fee as long as you spend a set amount on food and drink, from around £500 per event. BYO venues let you bring your own drinks, and sometimes your own catering, in exchange for a corkage fee, which can cut costs sharply. Dry hire venues give you a blank-canvas space with no packages attached, ideal if you want to arrange your own suppliers and pay only for the room.

Hosting something more formal? For a wedding, affordable wedding venues in Birmingham range from restored halls to banqueting spaces with per-head catering from modest minimums, with Digbeth and the surrounding halls known for value on larger and multicultural weddings. For work events, affordable conference venues and meeting rooms typically day-hire from around £330 and come with AV and space for 50 to 100.

On the tightest budget of all? Community halls in Birmingham are the lowest-cost spaces in the city per hour, from as little as £15 to £30, and suit workshops, club meetings, classes and family occasions. The Hub on the Green is one of the most affordable, with hourly room hire that keeps a modest event well within budget

How to choose an affordable venue in Birmingham

  1. Set your guest count first, then filter by size so you are not paying for space you will not use.
  2. Decide your budget route: hourly hire for short bookings, day hire for full events, or minimum spend for sociable parties.
  3. Check whether external catering and BYO alcohol are allowed if you want to cut costs (ask about corkage).
  4. Confirm what is included: tables, chairs, AV, cleaning and staff can all affect the real price.
  5. Message the host directly through Tagvenue to confirm availability and the full quote before you book.

Booked Games Room at Barbara's Bier Haus Birmingham
5.0
The venue was excellent and everything went brilliantly for my party. The organisation was brilliantly handled by Kelsie beforehand, who kept in touch regularly. The team on the day worked really hard to make everything go smoothly and my party couldn't have gone better. Lots of flexibility in what you can do at the venue, like playing your own music, but Kelsie can arrange DJs and musicians if you wish. The food was excellent for the cost, and much better than I expected in all honesty. All in all it is a brilliant venue, with a brilliant team!

We hired this venue for a work function for about 180 colleagues, everything was amazing from the beginning, going to see the venue, discussing cost, requirements, food, drinks. Sam the manager couldn't do enough for us and we had a brilliant night! Thank you to all the team that made this event so good!

Booked First Floor at Bundobust

The event was a huge success and we couldn’t have been happier with the communication leading up to it and the execution on the day. The event co-ordination was well organised and we were given free run of the space which suited our diverse guest list very well. A hugely cost-effective experience and perfect food for our guests which they thoroughly enjoyed. Highly recommended!

Booked The Secret Room at The Lost & Found Birmingham
5.0
Space, layout, size and decor of room was perfect for a group of up to 25 persons. The Buffet food was hot and delicious and guests loved the variety and taste and was good value. Dedicated bar-tender was a definite plus point and guests were able to get the drinks they wanted and without too much delay. Perfect venue for a private function and location was excellent too. Loved the novelty of the Secret Room and importantly hidden away with no gatecrashers. The Bar-tender and Daisy get a special mention as they were brilliant on the night and catered for almost all our needs and quick tidy up and keeping us informed throughout the evening of timings and delays to manage situations. Overall, no huge hitches!

The venue is absolutely stunning and was perfect for our event of 200 people. Kika was amazing at communicating and organising the event with us. She was really friendly and helpful and eased the stress of organising a ball as a student. The staff on the night were also lovely and everything ran smoothly.
