What size dance studio do you need for your group?

What floor, mirrors and sound system should a London dance studio have?

Check the floor, mirrors and sound setup against the type of dance or activity you are planning.

  • Floor: London studios on Tagvenue include sprung Harlequin, sprung wooden and wooden laminate floors. For example, the Espinosa Studio and Muir-Warden Studio at bbodance, list sprung Harlequin floors, while Studio 3 at The Boury Studios in Vauxhall lists a sprung floor. Confirm that the floor and footwear policy are suitable for your dance style before booking.
  • Painted wooden floor with riggingPole Mission in Soho has ceiling-mounted poles and removable aerial hoops across 450 sq ft.
  • Mirrors: Check how much of the room is mirrored and whether the mirrors suit your class or rehearsal. Full-height or wall-to-wall mirrors are available at studios including Hone Studio 28 and Dance Rooms Dalston.
  • Sound: Don't assume every studio uses Bluetooth. Listings include Bluetooth, AUX and wired connections. Confirm how your device connects and bring any adapter or cable you may need.

For specialist activities, check the equipment as well. Ballet studios may offer barres and pianos, while pole and aerial studios require dedicated rigging and equipment.

What are the best areas of London for dance studio hire, and why?

The best area depends on who needs to get there and the type of studio you need. Central London works well for groups travelling from different parts of the city, East London has the widest choice from budget rooms to large studios, and South London is particularly strong for technical and ballet training. Prices vary by studio size as much as location, so outer London is not always cheaper.

  • Central London – a practical choice for after-work classes, auditions and groups coming from different directions. Studios average £40 per hour on Tagvenue, typically £30–£66. Best when a group is travelling in from different directions, or for after-work classes. Studio Movement on Chiswell Street (EC1Y) has wall-to-wall mirrors, a wooden floor, ballet barres, and toilet and shower facilities. The Audition House in Fitzrovia is two minutes from Warren Street. Pole Mission sits on Dean Street in Soho.
  • East London – best for variety, with both some of the cheapest small rooms and some of the largest dance spaces in the current listings. Studios average £50 per hour, typically £35–£83. The widest range in the city: the largest spaces are here, and so are the cheapest small rooms. Sugar House Island in Stratford (E15) holds 60 people; MAXX Studios in Hackney (E9) holds 80 people; Dance Rooms Dalston starts at £13 per hour.
  • South London – a strong choice for ballet, technique and rehearsals requiring specialist flooring. Studios average £48 per hour, typically £35–£72. Strongest area for technical and ballet training thanks to bbodance at Battersea Reach, with two sprung Harlequin studios. Also the direction to search from Croydon: Yogira Studio in Carshalton (SM5) and The Warehouse Dance Studios in Wallington (SM6) are the closest verified options.
  • North London – seful for smaller classes, rehearsals and groups travelling on the Northern line. Solo Studio at artsHouse in Camden (NW1) and Islington Studios in Archway (N19) are both well rated and reachable on the Northern line.

Which type of dance studio should you book?

Choose the studio around your activity rather than the room name. For ballet, contemporary or high-impact dance, prioritise a sprung floor. For regular classes and rehearsals, a simple mirrored hire studio is usually the most affordable option. For filming, auditions or fitness sessions, specialist facilities may matter more than a dance-specification floor.

If you need the studio for…

Look for

Typical rate

What to know

Ballet, contemporary or technical training

Sprung floor, mirrors and barres

£22–£59/hr

Dance-school studios have specialist floors and equipment, but may have stricter footwear rules and higher peak rates

Classes, practice or choreography

Mirrored independent hire studio with suitable sound system

£12–£35/hr

Usually the cheapest and most flexible option, but floor quality and sound equipment vary

Dance filming or content creation

High ceilings, natural or controllable light and suitable backgrounds

£17–£42/hr

Creative studios can be better on camera, but the floor may not be sprung

Auditions or castings

Clear floor space plus a separate waiting area

£30–£34/hr

Useful facilities for managing performers, but not necessarily designed for high-impact dance

Yoga, Pilates, Zumba or mixed movement

Ventilation, comfortable flooring and enough working space

£20–£30/hr

Modern facilities and air conditioning are common, but specialist dance flooring is less likely

If you already have a teacher or choreographer, you usually only need to hire the studio itself. If you need instruction as well as the space, check whether the venue offers classes or whether you need to arrange an instructor separately.

Which London dance studios look best on camera?

For dance filming, content creation and photo shoots, look for high ceilings, good natural or controllable light, uncluttered backgrounds and enough floor space to frame the movement. A sprung floor may be less important for a short shoot than it is for a full rehearsal, but confirm the flooring is suitable for the choreography.

Good options on Tagvenue include:

  • Hone Studio 28 – Dance & Photo (Poplar, E14) – from £17 per hour. High ceilings, full-height mirrors, white paper backdrop. Shoots involving more than two people require a four-hour minimum booking.
  • The Sugar House at Sugar House Island (Stratford, E15) – from £28 per hour, up to 60 people. Rated 4.8/5, with air conditioning, natural light and mirrors. A reviewer described it as spacious and modern with a strong sound system.
  • Monier Works (Bow, E3) – from £26 per hour, up to 20 people.
  • Islington Studios (Archway, N19) – from £27 per hour, 60 sqm with high ceilings, natural light and external catering allowed.

Before booking, confirm that filming is permitted at the standard hire rate. Some studios may apply different rates or conditions when professional cameras, lighting or other production equipment are brought in.

What events and activities can you host in a dance studio?

Dance studios can work for rehearsals, auditions, fitness classes, filming and group activities as well as dance lessons. The right setup depends on what you are doing: rehearsals need enough usable floor space, auditions benefit from a waiting area, and parties may require permission for food, drinks or decorations.

  • Hen parties look for a private studio with enough room for mixed-ability participants. Check whether food and drinks are permitted and whether you need to arrange an instructor separately.  See hen party activities in London.
  • Children’s partiescheck that the studio permits your planned activity, decorations and any food or refreshments before booking.  See kids’ party venues in London.
  • Dance and Theatre Rehearsalscheck the working capacity, floor type and whether you have enough time for warm-up, setup and a full run-through.
  • Auditions and casting calls – a separate waiting room matters more than floor quality. The Audition House in Fitzrovia is built for this.
  • Fitness and movement classes – yoga, Pilates and Zumba can work well in dance studios. Check ventilation, floor suitability and working capacity.
  • Photo and film shoots – look for high ceilings, suitable backgrounds, controllable light and enough distance to frame the movement. Confirm filming permissions before booking.
  • Corporate and team events – a dance class works well for mixed-ability groups. See team building venues in London.

Which dance studios in London is best for your needs?

The best dance studio depends on what matters most for your booking. For a large rehearsal, look at MAXX Studios in Hackney; for ballet and technical training, bbodance has specialist sprung flooring; and for a low-cost small studio, Dance Rooms Bermondsey starts from £12 per hour.

What should you check before you book?

Before booking, check the working capacity, floor type, footwear rules, booking time and music connection. Listed capacity alone does not tell you how many people can comfortably dance in the space, and facilities such as sprung floors, air conditioning and Bluetooth vary considerably between studios.

  1. Working capacity – ask how many people can comfortably dance at once, not just the maximum listed capacity. A studio that holds 20 people standing may have a much lower working capacity for choreography.
  2. Floor and footwear – make sure the floor suits your dance style and check the footwear policy. Studios may prohibit outdoor shoes, unprotected heels, tap shoes or heavy boots.
  3. Minimum booking and setup time – two-hour minimums are common. Your booked slot usually needs to cover setup, warm-up, cool-down and packing away as well as the session itself.
  4. Ventilation – check for air conditioning, opening windows or another ventilation option, particularly for larger groups or high-intensity sessions.
  5. Music connection – don't assume the studio has Bluetooth. London listings include Bluetooth, AUX and wired-only systems, so check what you need and bring the right cable or adapter.
  6. Privacy – confirm that the room is exclusively yours and, if privacy or recording matters, whether noise carries between neighbouring studios.
  7. Filming permissions – if you're recording professional content, check whether filming is permitted and whether different rates, minimum booking times or conditions apply.

Booked Film and Photography Studio at Leonard Studio
4.8
I booked the studio to do a videoshoot for my students for 4.5hrs! The studio provided me with a lot of light, different sceneries and props to play and work around with. Andrea was really accommodating and leave me with freedom to work around the space a rearrange the furniture as much as we liked. I think is important to have spaces where creative expression was allowed and I found this one was a great one. Also the opportunity to have bathroom, kitchen and space where my dancers could prepare themselves was another mega super point.

Booked Tails Studio at West End Tails

The space is in an excellent location and features a well-functioning sound system, effective air conditioning and ample room for a group of 15 to 20 people. It is a modern facility with excellent care from the staff and owner. The team is also proactive in responding to my queries promptly. I would certainly book the space again as it is well worth the price. The studio is easy to arrange in their busy schedule and I can organise my weekly class smoothly. I would like to express my sincere thanks for everything from our first visit to this wonderful space. We are delighted with it and look forward to seeing you next week.

Booked The Secret Garden at Exhibit
5.0
We hosted our Sip & Paint evening at The Exhibit and had a wonderful time. The private mezzanine space felt cosy and intimate, and having our own karaoke room afterwards was such a fun bonus. The venue team was super organised and handled most of the setup we needed, so everything we added was just extra, which we really appreciated. Shoutout to Hannah for being flexible and taking such good care of our guests, and shoutout to Ollie for being super attentive, from making sure our speakers and mics were working to setting up the karaoke room. The balcony access was a lovely touch, and the on-site food and drink made it easy for guests to relax and enjoy themselves. A great venue for a creative, social evening, we would happily return.

Booked Monier Works at Monier Works - Create Destroy Studios
4.8
It’s very hard to leave a review because of what happened. I came from Milton Keynes to train for one hour, I booked this studio from 12:00-13:00. There was still some people there at 12:57, and one of the girls said they booked it until 14:00. I called and explain the situation directly to the venue, they confirmed that mine was correct. The girl eventually got a call explaining that we are in use of the studio from 12:00-13:00. Anyways, they had some tables and stuff everywhere, we event helped them moved to the side as we need the main space. That took some time so we didn’t get to start until nearly 10 past 12. However, as soon as it was 13:00 on the dot! They walked in and claimed the space back which was very rude. Also, their aura the whole time was so off putting. They’re clearly not happy with us but I don’t think I should be made to feel that way when I didn’t do anything wrong. The space over all is nice as it’s spacious and the light coming in was nice too. There is a toilet just outside the studio so that was handy too if anybody needs it.

Booked LG1 - MAXX Studios at Platform Studios East - Create Destroy
4.8
Apart from contradicting codes via email and text message which caused some confusion getting into the actual studio once inside the building, everything was extremely smooth. The premises are well kept and well equipped. Toilet facilities were clean and stocked and overall it was a very pleasant experience hosting a class there. It could benefit from more lighting options perhaps, but that would just be to elevate an already pleasant experience.
