You can! There’s a lot of high capacity bars available for hire in Sydney. To begin with, The Sporting Globe King Street Wharf exclusive venue hire allows you to invite up to 350 guests in a sitting arrangement or 500 standing. One of the largest private bars in Sydney listed on our site is the Space Nightclub at Shark Hotel - it can accommodate even 1,000 standing guests!

A bar venue may be a cocktail bar, rooftop bar, nightclub or other drinks-led venue available for group bookings or exclusive hire. A pub function room is a bookable room or event space within a pub. Which works better depends on your event rather than the label. Compare the capacity, privacy, food and drinks options, music policy and finish time before booking. On price they’re close: bars for groups in Sydney average $3,000 minimum spend, and pubs with function rooms in Sydney sit in a similar band.

BYO alcohol policies vary by venue. If bringing your own drinks is important, use the BYO alcohol filter when shortlisting Sydney bars and check the individual listing before booking. Also confirm whether corkage or other conditions apply to BYO drinks.

Some Sydney bars charge no separate room hire fee, but that doesn't necessarily mean the booking is free. Instead, you may need to meet a minimum spend on food and drinks. The Basement Area at Hideout Bar in Neutral Bay, for example, starts from a $300 minimum spend with no separate hire fee. Check the total minimum spend when comparing venues advertised without a hire fee.

Your Guide to Hiring Private Bars in Sydney

What counts towards a minimum spend, and what doesn't?

A minimum spend is the amount you commit to spending with the venue rather than a separate room hire fee. Exactly what counts towards it varies by venue, so confirm this before booking.

Food and drinks such as cocktails, beer, wine, soft drinks, canapés and set menus may count towards the minimum spend. Separate charges such as room hire, additional staffing, security, AV or entertainment may not.

If you don't reach the agreed minimum spend, you may still need to pay the difference. Check the venue's terms and calculate the minimum against your expected guest count before booking.

What size bar do I need for my guest count?

Sydney bars often list separate seated and standing capacities, and the difference can be substantial. Choose the figure that matches your event format rather than relying on the venue's maximum capacity.

Guest count

Space to consider

Average minimum spend

Up to 60

Private room, basement, lounge or booth area

$2,000 per event

Around 60 to 120

Private bar area, terrace or partial venue hire

$3,500 per event

150+

Whole venue, large function bar or nightclub floor

$8,000 per event

If you need dining tables, a stage or dance floor, ask the venue how these affect usable capacity before booking.

Private space, semi-private area or whole venue – what's the difference?

Sydney bar venues offer semi-private areas, private spaces and whole-venue hire, with different levels of exclusivity. Check the space type before booking so you know whether other customers will still be using the venue.

Booking type

What you get

Best for

Semi-private area

A reserved section within a venue that remains open to other customers

Lower-budget gatherings where complete privacy isn't essential

Private space within a venue

A separate room or area reserved exclusively for your group

Birthdays, corporate drinks and private parties

Whole venue

Exclusive use of the venue for your event

Larger events or occasions where privacy and control matter

You can also filter Sydney bar venues by whole venue, private space, semi-private area or private outdoor space to compare similar booking types. Entire Venue at Stanley's on Stanley in Darlinghurst is a whole-venue booking from $2,500 minimum spend; Beer Garden & Lounge at the same venue is a private space within it.

Which Sydney bar suits your type of event?

Start with how you plan to use the space. A birthday with dancing, corporate drinks and a casual reception may need similar capacity but very different facilities, music policies and levels of privacy.

Where are the best areas in Sydney to hire a bar?

Sydney Harbour has the largest supply of bar spaces among Tagvenue's main Sydney bar areas and the lowest average minimum spend at $2,500. The CBD is close behind at $2,550 and suits centrally located events, while Darling Harbour averages $4,500 and is better suited to groups prioritising waterfront settings and nearby nightlife.

Are there rooftop and waterfront bars for hire in Sydney?

Yes. Tagvenue lists 28 rooftop bar spaces in Sydney, averaging around $6,000 minimum spend per event. Rooftop and waterfront venues can carry higher booking commitments, so compare the setting with practical factors such as weather cover, capacity and the indoor backup option.

Before booking a rooftop bar, check:

  1. Wet-weather backup: Is there an indoor alternative, and can it hold your full guest list?
  2. Shade and heating: What protection is available for hot afternoons or cooler evenings?
  3. Wind exposure: Ask whether wind affects decorations, table settings or how the outdoor space is used.
  4. Weather decision: When does the venue decide whether the event moves indoors, and does moving affect the price or minimum spend?
  5. Exclusive use: Is the rooftop or terrace reserved entirely for your group, or is it part of a larger shared venue?

If an outdoor setting is a priority, browse  rooftop bars in Sydney or narrow the search to cheap rooftop bars in Sydney filters to the lower end.

Can you have a DJ, dancing and a late finish?

Some Sydney bar venues allow DJs and dancing, but music policies and finish times vary by venue. In most places, alcohol licence times range from 10pm to 5am, so check both the entertainment policy and permitted finish time before booking.

Some venues also list licence extensions as available. Blackwattle Bar + Brewery and Verandah do, but confirm the availability, cost and permitted event finish time directly with the venue.

Also check:

  • whether there's an existing dance floor or furniture needs to be moved
  • whether you can bring an external DJ
  • any music or noise restrictions
  • the event finish time and last drinks service

For entertainment-led events, you can also compare nightclub venues in Sydney and karaoke bars in Sydney.

What drinks and food arrangements can you book?

Drinks can be handled in several ways when you hire a Sydney bar. The right option depends on whether you want to control the total spend, fix the cost per guest or let guests buy their own drinks.

  • Bar tabYou set a spending limit and drinks are charged to the tab until it is reached. This gives you control over the total drinks budget.
  • Drinks packageYou pay a fixed per-person price for a specified drinks selection and period of time. This makes the cost easier to predict for a confirmed guest list.
  • Cash barGuests buy their own drinks rather than charging them to the host.

Food options vary from bar snacks and canapés to more substantial menus. External catering isn't standard, although some venues, including Golden Age Cinema & Bar and Stanley's on Stanley, list it as permitted. If bringing your own caterer matters, use the external-catering filter and confirm the policy with the venue.

Confirm dietary requirements when you enquire so the venue can tell you what can be accommodated.

Where can you hire a bar in Sydney for 25–30 people?

For 25–30 guests, look for private spaces with capacities close to your group size rather than paying the minimum spend of a much larger room. Compare the total minimum spend with per-person options before booking.

Is the venue accessible, and how will guests get home?

Accessibility is filterable on this page – wheelchair access, accessible toilets, step-free guest entrance, accessible parking and lift to all floors are separate filters. These features vary by venue, so check the facilities you specifically need.

Here are some venues with wheelchair access, accessible toilets and lift access: Bar at Loom Lounge in Crows Nest, Rabbit Bar at The ArtHouse Hotel in Sydney CBD and Exclusive Venue Hire at The Sporting Globe King Street Wharf.

Basement and upper-floor bars are common but don't assume that an accessible building entrance means the event space itself is step-free.

Booked The Garden Bar and Terrace at Tatler Sydney
5.0
We had the terrace and garden bar for a party of around 45 and it was perfect! There is room to sit or stand and easy access to the reserved bar area. Brendan was so obliging in allowing early access to drop off balloons and a birthday cake. His communication and guidance throughout was exceptional, and he's a very calm person, which makes organising a party less stressful! I ordered some pizzas and they were a great size (bigger than I expected) and delicious. I had a bar tab and the staff kept me posted throuout the night. I think the cocktails were a hit as they weren't included, but so many of my friends were loving them! The bar staff were amazing, the doorman welcoming, and the DJ had everyone up on the dancefloor until it was time to go home. This was a big birthday, and the night couldn't have gone anymore perfectly. Thank you to Brendan and the team :)

Booked The Chapel at Greenwood Hotel
4.7
A great location for a big Corporate party - Meline was super responsive and helpful in the lead up to the event, and then the party itself was so much fun. The Chapel and adjoining courtyards were a fantastic, self-contained space. We were allowed to decorate and bring in our own photobooth. The food was abundant - it just kept coming - this is really unusual at these large events!! Meline accommodated our many dietary requirements and everything was delicious, with the paella station being a particular hit. Thank you Greenwood for hosting us - we will be back!
