The William Walker sits under the shadow of the 11th century cathedral in central Winchester. William Walker was a deep-sea diver called in in the early 1900s, when huge cracks started to appear in the cathedral walls. Walker worked underground in water to shore up the foundations of the building for 6 years. An estimated 25,000 bags of concrete, 115,000 concrete blocks, and 900,000 bricks were used in the operation. The swing sign is an actual diver's helmet, in tribute to the man.
The pub today features William Walker memorabilia, with a historical yet modern feel. The focal point is the brass-topped bar surrounded by ornate tiling. The downstairs space has 55 seats for drinking and dining. The Diving Room upstairs has views of the approach to the cathedral — a spot to watch the world go by. This room is used for dining, but can be reserved for gatherings, meetings, and other events for 30-40 people in a private space.
The pub offers a range of modern craft beers, real ales, wines, and cocktails, selected by General Manager, Andrea. The kitchen serves modern and classic dishes.
