Your Guide to Hiring Affordable Venues in Brisbane

Hire fee, minimum spend or per person – which is actually cheapest?

The cheapest pricing model depends on your guest count, event length and whether food and drinks are already part of your budget.

  • Choose hourly or daily hire for shorter events, DIY setups or when you want to organise your own catering. Remember to add any food, drinks, equipment and staffing to the room price.
  • Consider minimum spend if guests will already be buying food and drinks. Instead of paying a separate room fee, you commit to spending an agreed amount at the venue. Divide the minimum spend by your guest count to see whether it works for your budget.
  • Choose per-person pricing when you want a predictable cost for catering and service. Check exactly what the package includes before comparing it with hire-fee or minimum-spend options.

Quick calculation: A $650 minimum spend for 50 guests works out at $13 per person. If your group is likely to spend at least that much on food and drinks anyway, minimum spend could offer better value than paying a separate hire fee.

What can you hire in Brisbane for under $500?

For a budget under $500, focus on hourly studios, small function rooms and pub/bar spaces rather than whole-venue hire. Current Tagvenue options include:

For shorter events, compare the hourly rate with the total time you need the space. A three-hour booking at $50 per hour costs $150, but remember to include setup and pack-down time when calculating your total hire.

Where are the cheapest areas to hire a venue in Brisbane?

Venue prices generally fall as you move away from central Brisbane, but the cheapest hire rate isn't always the lowest overall cost. Consider transport, parking and what is included as well as the venue price.

Can you hire a venue for free in Brisbane?

Some Brisbane venues have no separate hire fee if you agree to a minimum spend on food and drinks. This isn't free venue hire – you're committing to spend a set amount – but it can be good value if your group would spend that amount anyway. Minimum spend venues in Brisbane currently start from $650.

For another low-cost option, check Brisbane City Council community halls. Community rates can be lower than commercial rates, although eligibility, security bonds and other conditions apply.

Which venue types are cheapest in Brisbane?

The cheapest venue type depends on what you need included. A low hire fee can mean organising your own catering, furniture or equipment, while a higher-priced venue may include more in the booking.

Venue type

Typical pricing

Why it can save money

What to consider

Blank-canvas spaces

$30–$154/hour

Some of Brisbane's lowest hourly rates, with flexibility for DIY events

You may need to organise catering, styling, furniture or equipment yourself.

Pubs & bar function rooms

$250–$500/day or around $45/person

Bar, staff and some event facilities may already be available

Check minimum spend requirements, particularly for popular dates and times.

Cafés & restaurants

$25–$73/person

Food and service can be bundled into one predictable price

Menus, timings and external catering options may be more restricted.

Hotel function rooms

Around $770/day on average

Facilities and professional event support can reduce the number of extras you need to organise

Higher headline rates can make them less suitable for very tight budgets.

Council community halls

Varies by facility and booking type

Community rates can provide a lower-cost alternative to commercial venues

Check bonds, permitted event types, booking periods and other Council conditions.

What are the cheapest venues in Brisbane by occasion?

The best-value venue type depends on what you're planning. A low-cost DIY space can work well for a casual party, while an event with catering or AV may be cheaper overall in a venue where those are already included.

Birthdays and 21sts

Pub and bar function rooms can offer good value because the bar, staff and basic event facilities are already in place. Laneway Bar at The Mix Bar starts at $250 hire fee per day for 70 standing, and The Captain's Den at Barbossa Bar runs from $25 per person for up to 45. If you are hosting an 18th or 21st, confirm the venue permits the event type – some spaces restrict age-milestone parties. Browse more cheap birthday party venues in Brisbane.

Weddings and engagements

For a budget wedding or engagement, compare the total package rather than venue hire alone. Catering, drinks, furniture and staffing can make a venue with a higher starting price better value than a cheaper dry-hire space. Heritage Room at The Mix Bar starts at $440 per event on its wedding offer, The Grand Hall at Ovolo The Valley from $850 minimum spend per day for 90 guests. Browse more options on affordable wedding venues in Brisbane.

Work functions and team days

Look for venues that already include the facilities you need, such as Wi-Fi, a projector or screen and parking.  The Workroom at Studio1 covers all three from a $50 hire fee per hour and seats 60 theatre-style. King Island Room at North Lakes Hotel offers 100 theatre-style with projector, conference call facilities and free parking from $650 minimum spend.

What extra costs should you budget for?

A low advertised venue price doesn't always mean a low final bill. Before comparing quotes, check whether you'll need to pay extra for:

  • Security bond – common at community halls and dry hire venues, refundable after your booking.
  • Security guards – Brisbane City Council may require a minimum of two Council-contracted guards for events in the weekend function hire period, at additional cost.
  • Corkage and buyout fees – charged on BYO alcohol and external catering respectively.
  • Cleaning and pack-down – some venues charge separately; others expect you to leave the space as you found it.
  • Setup time – check whether your hire window includes bump-in and bump-out, or whether the clock starts when your event does.
  • AV and furniture – confirm what is included. Tables, chairs, PA and projector are supplied at some venues and hired in at others.

How to cut the cost of venue hire in Brisbane?

  • Book weekday or daytime. Weekend evening rates are the highest across every venue type, and Council applies separate weekend function rates.
  • Match the room to your guest count. Paying for 150 capacity when 60 are coming is the most common overspend. Use the capacity filter.
  • Compare hourly against daily hire. A four-hour event at $85 per hour costs $340 – less than most daily rates for the same room.
  • Take a room, not the whole venue. Level One at The Mix Bar is $300 per day; the whole venue is $500.
  • Do the minimum spend maths first. If your group will spend $2,000 on food and drink anyway, a $2,000 minimum spend venue is effectively free hire.
  • Check the transport cost. A cheaper outer-suburb venue that needs rideshares for 40 guests may cost more in total than an inner-city room on the train line.

Booked Heritage Room at The Mix Bar

The venue was an incredible space… wonderful atmosphere with ample seating and standing bars. Mick the manager and his team were amazing and very accommodating to deal with. The whole team from bar staff to the kitchen staff were very professional and friendly. It’s the little things they do to make sure the whole party goes well even checking during the event that everything was going as planned. It was an absolute pleasure to deal with Mick and his team. I would highly recommend this venue if you are looking for a venue to host a party.

Booked The Conference Room at Punthill Apartment Hotel Spring Hill

Absolutely spectacular venue. I host events regularly, and I can confidently say that this will be my go to venue for any future events I run in Brisbane. From the moment I arrived, everything was ready and perfectly set up. The tables, water, mints, everything had been prepared for us, which made the whole experience so easy. The service was incredible. Everyone who assisted me, including the team in the lobby, was genuinely helpful, welcoming and always ready to assist with anything we needed. The venue itself is beautiful, and the location could not be better. Right in the heart of Brisbane, with parking right next door and a café nearby, which made it incredibly convenient for both me and my guests. I left extremely happy with the whole experience. I run events all the time, so finding a venue where I know I can arrive and everything will be taken care of means a lot. This will definitely be my venue for future events in Brisbane. Highly recommend!

Booked The Brasserie at The Lord Alfred
5.0
We had our wedding reception at The Lord Alfred Sports Bar, and it was honestly the best decision we made! From the very first enquiry right through to the night itself, the staff were incredible. So easy to deal with, professional, and genuinely went above and beyond to make everything run smoothly. The Sports Bar was the perfect space for our relaxed, cocktail-style reception. It had the ideal mix of fun and classy. Great atmosphere, plenty of room for guests to mingle, and that Brisbane city charm without feeling too formal. The bar staff kept drinks flowing all night, the food was amazing (everyone commented on how good it was!), and the setup looked absolutely beautiful. We had so many compliments from our guests about how perfect the night felt. Comfortable, seamless, and full of energy. If you’re looking for a venue that takes the stress out of wedding planning, delivers 10/10 service, and knows how to host a party, The Lord Alfred is it. Thank you to the whole team for making our wedding reception so memorable. It honestly couldn’t have gone any better 💙

Booked Platform Level at The Transcontinental Hotel
4.6
Our experience was excellent with Transcontinental Hotel. Ashley and the team were very accommodating, kept us up to date with changes from both ends and delivered quality service throughout the event. Food was excellent proportion (attendees wished we had ordered more sliders as they were delicious) and bought out at right times. The Trans Hotel team were also very accommodating at the end of our event as we ran well over time. Thank you so much for making our first End of Year Event since 2019 one to remember. I have not had any negative feedback from the 345 staff that attended.
