Not always. Minimum spend means no charge for the room, but you commit to spending a set amount on food and drinks and pay any shortfall. Divide the minimum spend by your guest count: if it exceeds what your group realistically spends per head, a hire-fee room is cheaper. Melbourne pub rooms run from $50 to $3,000 minimum spend, or $300 to $800 hire fee per session

The Private Dining Room at Temperance Hotel seats 14. For small seated groups, also consider pubs with private dining rooms, as larger function rooms may come with minimum spends designed for bigger parties.

Licence times across the Melbourne pub function rooms reviewed range from midnight to 5am. Some rooms also offer licence extensions, but the room's licence does not necessarily determine your booking time. Confirm both your booked finish time and the venue's licence before booking.

Accessibility varies by room. Some function spaces are on upper floors or in basements, so check step-free access, lift availability and accessible toilets for the specific room you are considering. Confirm any accessibility requirements directly with the venue before booking.

Policies vary by venue. Some pubs may allow external items such as celebration cakes and charge a cake cutting fee, while other outside food or drinks may not be permitted. Check the venue's BYO, external catering and cakeage policies before booking.

Your Guide to Hiring Pubs with Function Rooms in Melbourne

Does “no hire fee” mean a Melbourne pub function room is free?

No. A room with no hire fee may still have a minimum spend, which means committing to spend a set amount on food and drinks. If your group spends less, you pay the shortfall. Depending on your group size and expected spend, this can cost more than paying a separate hire fee.

For example, 30 guests spending $40 each would generate around $1,200 in food and drink spend. With a $300 room hire fee, the total would be $1,500. With a $2,000 minimum spend, the same group would still pay $2,000.

To compare the two, divide the minimum spend by your guest count. If that figure is higher than your group is likely to spend per person, a hire-fee room may offer better value.

Which Melbourne pubs have function rooms with no hire fee?

Some Melbourne pub function rooms have no separate hire fee, but you will usually need to meet a minimum spend on food and drinks. Lower-cost options include:

Always check the minimum spend as well as the hire fee when comparing rooms.

How many guests will a Melbourne pub function room actually hold?

Seated and standing capacities can differ significantly in pub function rooms. Use the standing capacity for cocktail parties and drinks receptions, and the seated capacity for dinners, presentations and other events where guests need a seat.

How private is a pub function room in Melbourne?

“Function room” can describe anything from a semi-private area to exclusive use of the whole venue, so check exactly what is included before booking.

  1. Fully private room — An enclosed space separate from the main pub, sometimes with its own bar or entrance. Private Space at Bakers Arms is an example. Best when privacy matters for your event.
  2. Exclusive floor or level — A whole floor reserved for your group while the rest of the pub remains open. Level 1 at The Oxford Scholar is an example.
  3. Semi-private area — A reserved section of the pub that is not fully enclosed, so you still share some of the atmosphere and noise of the main venue. Side Bar at The Clifton Hill Hotel is an example.
  4. Whole-venue hire — Exclusive use of the entire pub, giving you the most privacy and control. Entire Venue at The George on Collins is an example, accommodating up to 500 standing.

What should you confirm before booking a Melbourne pub function room?

Before booking, confirm the details that affect your final cost and how you can use the space.

  1. The exact room and capacity — confirm both seated and standing capacity for your planned layout.
  2. The pricing model — minimum spend, hire fee or per-person rate, including what is covered and any additional charges.
  3. Deposit and cancellation terms — how much is due, when payments become non-refundable and what happens if you cancel.
  4. Food and drinks — catering format, dietary requirements, drinks packages or bar tabs, plus any cakeage or external-food rules.
  5. Final guest numbers — when they are due and what happens if attendance changes.
  6. Access and event times — setup access, start and finish times, and whether an extension is available.
  7. Facilities and entertainment — confirm any PA, projector, Wi-Fi, DJ, live music or dancing requirements.
  8. Accessibility — check step-free access, lifts and accessible toilets for the specific room.

Compare the full quote rather than the headline price, particularly when choosing between minimum-spend and hire-fee rooms.

Wonderful experience from start to finish. The staff were incredibly attentive and intuitive throughout the entire evening, anticipating our every need without us even having to ask. Nothing was ever too much trouble and every request was handled with complete ease and a genuine smile. The food was both generous and exceptional in quality, and the venue itself is absolutely lovely with a warm ambience that makes you want to stay all night. We recently hosted a 21st birthday at this venue and couldn’t have been happier. The setting is beautiful, with an eclectic ambiance that made the night feel really special. The private room was perfect—intimate, yet spacious enough for guests to spread out and mingle comfortably. The food was amazing, and the drinks selection was excellent, with entertaining bar staff adding to the atmosphere. A special mention to the staff, who were fantastic throughout—so helpful in the lead-up with all the organisational details, and absolutely brilliant on the night. Highly recommend for any special celebration!

Booked Whole Brewery at Inner North Brewing Company

This is a fantastic venue. The staff were wonderful! Liz is a star and I couldn’t have asked for a better venue. I booked this venue with Liz from the U.K. I was visiting Melbourne and looking for a venue. Liz was so helpful in answering my questions. We booked out 90% of the bar for a memorial and family get together. It was the perfect venue. Family came by tram and train. And parking on the street was easy as it was a Sunday. Everyone was really pleased with the venue.

Everything about LaDiDa was perfect. Barry helped us choose the champagne lounge for my birthday party and it was the ideal space. He was professional and communicated extremely well. I loved that there was a minimum spend so I could manage my budget. When the party started everything went smoothly. The staff were absolutely beautiful and nothing was too much. The sound system and audio visual equipment worked perfectly. Our friends and family were impressed and said they would definitely book the venue for their own functions. Thanks Barry.
