Livery Hall at Cutlers' Hall
About this space
The Livery Hall's main feature is its Victorian hammer beam roof.
High on the end wall above the canopy hangs a Barge Banner from the Lord Mayor's procession of 1763, when the Lord Mayor was Alderman Bridgen, a Cutler. It depicts the Arms of the Company and the City, Britannia, the Wand of Mercury, Roman Fasces, and the Wand of Aesculapius.
Around the walls are shields carried by Court members in the Lord Mayor's Processions of 1834 and 1984, when Alderman Henry Winchester and Alderman Sir Alan Traill — both Cutlers — each served as Lord Mayor.
Behind the Master's chair, which dates from at least the early 18th century, is a wooden canopy topped with the Royal Coat of Arms. The Stuart Arms depicted are believed to date from around 1670 to 1688, and are thought to have been carved by a contemporary of Grinling Gibbons, who at one point lived on the Company's premises at the Belle Sauvage Inn on Ludgate Hill.
