About American Mime Theatre
American Mime Theatre (AMT) is a historic performing company and school based in New York City, dedicated to preserving and evolving American Mime—a unique movement-based theatrical art form founded by Paul J. Curtis in 1952. Unlike traditional pantomime, American Mime emphasizes expressive, truthful movement rooted in deep character motivation, known as “acting in form.”
AMT trains performers through the Curtis Method, a disciplined process focused on self-discovery, precision, and presence. Classes and workshops are offered for artists at all levels—from actors and dancers to directors and educators—fostering both personal growth and professional development.
Led by Artistic Director Janet Carafa, AMT is revitalizing its mission through a new Studio School and Performing Company, while honoring its 70-year legacy. With a newly renovated studio and fresh productions, AMT continues to advance physical storytelling that transcends language and speaks to the universal human experience.
