Podcast Studios Rental Guide

Ready to take the plunge? When a passion project is prepared to launch, you only want the best, don't you? Get that podcast started right with any of Toronto's amazing offers. These studios are easily accessible downtown and offer amazing value for the money. Whether you are looking for a total production with a producer and an engineer or even if you are simply a newbie hoping to launch the next big thing, you can rest assured that you will find exactly what you need at just the right price.

Which Toronto districts have the best podcast studios?

While there are a few outliers, most podcast studios can be found in Downtown Toronto, and many are within an easy walk of Dundas St. On Bay Street, quite near the University of Toronto, you can find a studio dedicated entirely to podcast production, which might be a good choice for beginners. For more commercial productions, larger recording studios are available in Downsville and North York.

Why not just record a podcast on my own?

Although not impossible, it is certainly not easy to make your own podcast from scratch. You probably know by now that creating content is difficult enough as it is, and adding production and promotion will simply add to the stress. Overburdening yourself could possibly hinder your creative capabilities. The MPL Studio has everything you would need to make the perfect podcast, with professional audio equipment and video equipment available for you to use. It is best to have someone else to help you on the production side of things. Then all you will have to worry about is the podcast itself, and not about your gear or perfecting your recording and editing (which is the most frustrating part, especially if you are a beginner). That is why renting a studio preferably with an audio engineer will not only elevate the production quality of your podcast, but also give you the freedom to focus on marketing, distribution, and making your podcast as unique and creative as possible.

What should I bring to the studio?

The most important thing to bring to the studio is your prepared script or outline. This ensures that your podcast will flow seamlessly. The best gear in the world cannot help if you come into the studio unprepared.  A podcaster’s worst nightmare is dead air. Aside from the script, it is always a good idea to bring your own external hard drive with you, with a minimum of 32 GB, so you will always have a backup file of your recording. If you want to incorporate a visual element, you can either hire a podcast studio equipped to produce video podcasts or bring your own camera, memory cards, and tripods. Always check to see if the studio will offer an audio engineer to assist in the production of your podcast. Old Toronto and York, for instance, have studios with high-quality gear, optional video packages, and audio engineers for hire when you book time at studios such as Canarts Studios or Sandbox Studios.

How do I write a script?

Have something new and interesting to say

This part may seem obvious, but in a world as full of information as the one we live in now, having a new idea and the ability to discuss it in an interesting fashion is imperative. Always plan time to do some research on whatever you plan on presenting or discussing with others during your show.

The Conversation

When planning a podcast, it is vital that you prepare an outline of discussion points as well as segues that will help you transition between topics. When the conversation is planned out ahead of time, it is easier to achieve a natural flow which makes it  more enjoyable for the listener. During your podcast, it is best to list what you will be describing at the beginning of the episode, and then discuss them accordingly. This is how you maintain flow and make it easy for the person listening to follow.

What your script should include

  • An introduction
    • Introductions are important because you want to let your audience know who you are, what they will be listening to, and why it is important. During the introduction, you should lay out the roadmap of the podcast, introduce guests, and mention sponsors. A catchy theme song for your show is  also a big plus in getting the attention of your listeners
  • Topics
    • Following your introduction, it is time to discuss in detail the topics that you set out in your introduction. This is where you (and your guest) can elaborate and express your insights and opinions in ways that are constructive and are fun to listen to. When you make claims you should be prepared to back them up. If you have a guest, they should offer insights and opinions that contribute to interesting banter and a fruitful conversation.
  • A call to action/outro
    • Once you have brought your discussion to a close, you should recap the issues that were discussed. Also thank your guest for joining you, and your listeners for tuning in. Finally, you should remind your audience to like and follow you on social media platforms, follow and rate your podcast on streaming services, and offer them the opportunity to follow up on what was discussed by getting in contact with you.

FAQs about Podcast Studios in Toronto, ON

How much does it cost to rent a podcast studio in Toronto?

Hiring a recording studio for your podcast is a very affordable endeavour in Toronto. Most studios can be hired by the hour and are ready to help you get that podcast finished in no time at all! Expect costs to average between $30 to $150 per hour. These costs can include such extras as an audio engineer and help to monitor audio levels and mixing. At the higher end of the price range, you can enjoy such benefits as the help of a producer and 24 hour turnaround time for finished audio files. Many studios in Toronto are also willing to help market your podcast and will help you launch your podcast on streaming services for a fee. (All data from Tagvenue.)

What equipment should a podcast studio have?

A podcast studio should be located in a fully soundproofed room. Check the studio for soundproofed panelling or foam blocks that will block the noise. While some podcast production requires video equipment, and many studios will have this for hire, most productions still rely heavily on audio recordings. Check the mics and assess the quality. Good quality sound equipment such as headphones, a mixer and an audio interface, or a Rodecaster, are needed for quality production. Many studios will have an audio engineer whose services you can hire on an hourly basis who can help explain the process and take care of more complicated recording aspects. Some studios will also offer post-production services. At the very least, it is good to know how they will pass along your audio files, and you should make sure that you have the proper software to edit them.
