About Shaw Davey Slum
The Shaw Davey Slum is a celebration of Carlton’s diverse history and a great era for Australian culture. Situated in an old iconic building just off Lygon St, Carlton, we’ve brought to life an exciting 1960s themed bar with unique Australiana feel.
The name is based around a poverty report written in 1958 by two commissioners named Shaw and Davey about Carlton and the surrounding areas. Known as the windscreen survey (because they didn’t get out of their cars), the report recommended demolishing large areas of Carlton, known as the “slums”. The name is an oxymoron and a celebration of Carlton’s diverse history during a great era of Australian culture
