About One Penny Red
Built in 1901 by State Government architect, Walter Liberty Vernon, the building served as the Summer Hill Post Office until 1996. After years in private ownership, this iconic building opened to the public in 2014 as One Penny Red. The name, One Penny Red, gives a nod to the famous stamp, The Penny Red.
The Restaurant downstairs, originally the post office, is a beautiful light and airy space, with stunning high ceilings, and impressive windows creating a feeling of old-world charm. The custom-made molded zinc bar in the dining room brings the room into the modern-day world of restaurants and links the old and new.
Vernon’s Bar located upstairs was where the mail sorting was once done. The hoist above the bar is an original feature and reminder of the building’s work history.
